FPS Drop

Before i discuss my problems, here are my specs:
CPU: i7 4820k 3.7 ghz
GPU: r9 280x powercolor edition
RAM: 16gb

The problem i am experiencing is that my frames keep dropping to around 30 every minute or so and it's quite annoying. I have kept my task manager up and my CPU usage usually stays around 10% even when the fps drops happen. Nothing is wrong with my pc either, its only 4 months old, and i can play bf4 on ultra at 80~ fps. and many other games without any lag spikes. I have tried using optifine, and adding more ram, which fixes nothing. It is also not loading chunks as it happens even at my base where ive loaded the chunks already. If anyone has suggestions or knows a fix, that would be nice, thanks.

i have vsync on so it caps it at 60, without vsync i can hit like 200 fps with 32 render distance:)

With that graphics card your fps should never even be in double digits, sounds like minecraft is running of of your intergrated graphics. What is you fps when you dont get a drop?

Very odd, my pc has an i5 3570k (not overclocked) and a HD7750 an my fps rarely drops below 60fps (with render distance set at 10). But lets see if I can help you out.

Minecraft doesn't really take advantage of multiple threads, it really can only fully utilize one CPU core. So in optifine their are some settings that can help to reduce CPU usage in some areas to increase FPS. in Performance: turn on Smooth FPS, Smooth World, Fast Math, and Fast Render. In Video Settings: Set Chunk loading to "Multi-Core". And last, your Render distance: If you have it set above 10 then this could be one of your problems. Going from RD 10 (which loads 441 chunks) to RD 16 (which loads 1089 chunks) is loading a little over double the chunks. I'm not saying you must play on RD 10 and no higher, I'm saying if your playing on 16 RD maybe turn it down to like 15 (961 chunks), 14 (841 chunks), 13 (729 chunks), or 12 (625 chunks). Also on a side note MC doesn't really utilize the GPU all that much (unless you're running shaders), so when it comes to any graphics option you can turn it up with out a problem, with the exception of RD. (I maxed out almost every graphics setting with out any fps drops on my 7750).

Hope I helped.

I have a few questions:

1. How much RAM did you give Minecraft (Java uses RAM as CPU, so your CPU staying at 10% has nothing to do with it)
2. Is this singleplayer or multiplayer
3. Any mods?

I gave it 4 gb of ram, this is multiplayer and i have no mods on, although when i tried optifine, it did nothing.

Try setting your settings down and see if it even changes. You could also try to reinstall minecraft, it could also be outdated drivers. I would reccommend the program Driver Booster. It's by Iobit, just google that.
