Also, it is a game that stimulates creativity. for years, I was almost overflowing with ideas for stuff I wanted to make, great structures and stuff like that. But I was useless at perspective drawing, and didn't have the patience for 3D rendering.
then I discovered minecraft. I can now express my creativity easier.
besides, of all the games in the world, Minecraft is the best possible option to get addicted to. It has the best possibilities for learning stuff. few other games allow you to learn as much. also, the community is so large, it is a social network of itself. this website is a great example of it.
if you compare it to, for example, GTA, it becomes clear what the difference is. the only thing you learn there is killing people and driving badly 9as far as I know. corrrect me if I'm wrong). many other games are similar in this.
your mum is right about the distracitveness, though. an advice: remove the Minecraft.exe from your desktop, and put it in a folder somewhere deep in your files, or in the .minecraft folder in Appdata (that's for windows).
this way you won't see it every time you use your computer. and his helps getting a measure of control over the situation. but it still requires enourmous self-dicipline.

Restart your computer.
Or you could open Task manager, and kill the process called javaw.exe

I get this bug where the Task Manager doesn't let me end javaw.exe for some reason (this is a huge pain in the butt because I can't install mods or world saves when it's running--even if I have Minecraft itself closed). Anyways, if this is happening to you, I've found that restarting my computer does the trick.
I had this same issue on my sons computer. In my situation it was because he doesn't have an admin account. What I did was:
1. Completely uninstall java from admin account.
2. Restart computer, back into admin account.
3. Install the latest Java (right-click, run as administrator on the installer)
4. Make Minecraft always run as administrator (user accounts require password)
5. Restart, log in to user account.
6. Open task manager, start minecraft.
7. Once MC is open, shut it down and watch java.exe disappear from task list.
In my situation java had issues while trying to unhook from the system on user accounts for some reason. This was on after a complete system wipe, so I was pretty sure it did not pertain to anything else that had a hook into the java.exe.

Ohh, alright, I'll try that.
