So i'm going to be making a new computer next month and i was wondering if linux/ubuntu was able to be installed when you don't have any other operating system already installed? and if you could get it that you could go on somewhere like torrent sites or pirate bay to install windows from that. (i probably will still buy windows anyway} ?';]\==

Linux is basically windows for computer science geeks. Works well if you know what your doing, but stick with Windows if you don't.
Just my two cents and experience. Feel free to completely ignore and/or add to and/or rebuttal everything I just said.

You dont need another OS installed to run Linux but why would you even run linux? ok its great for stabillity but its not really ment to be used as a PC(Personal Computer) its more made for hosting and advanced server thingies and as far as i know it doesnt have a Interface? like its all commands you need to give in for it to do something? or am i mistaking?

No, this is wrong. Linux is a family of Operating Systems, most of which have full GUI environments comparable to Windows or OS X. It is completely possible to use Linux as a "PC". I personally have been using Ubuntu for almost 2 years now.

You don't "need" to use commands to do everything, however terminal is very useful and could be used to do nearly everything, unlike Windows where command prompt is fairly useless. For instance, in Ubuntu, I can install it and then run a script (that I made) that will use commands to get all of the software I use and set up my system how I would have to do manually in the past.

^^Someone doesn't know what he's talking about.

Linux has both desktop and server variants, just like Windows and Mac OSX do.
As someone else said, a USB stick is the easiest way to install. You can install to any PC with a hard drive, but you need an OS to create the USB stick.

Some people do sell install disks too, but it's 100% legal to do it for free so they're only really a last resort.

Hah yeah sorry -_- i was thinking I would end up being wrong. Oh well as long people dont start a war because of it.
I admin it never used linux so i really have no idea what i'm talking about. The only thing i know is that most servers use Linux because of its great fexibility and stability.
or am i wrong again? xD

It's fine, it's quite a common misconception because so many servers run Linux, but so few home computers ship with it.

The main reason a lot of servers run it is actually because it's free. If you want to run a Windows server for example, you have to pay for the software for each server, which makes the server needlessly more expensive. Some hosts do offer a windows server option, but you usually have to pay the extra costs yourself to do it.

But yeah, the flexibility and stability are huge selling points on servers too. Linux is much more stripped down than windows, so you get a lot more freedom in what you do with it, and it's much less resource intensive too. That's true for both servers and PCs - For example my girlfriends netbook barely loaded with windows 7, but when I put Ubuntu 12.04 on for her it was lightning fast.

Yeah you can install Linux without another OS already installed. There's several ways but the easiest is to load up Ubuntu, or your preferred Linux Distro, onto a flash drive and boot up from the flash drive.

I use LinuxLive (LiLi) to create bootable flash drives.

It'll ask if you want to install the OS or just test it out. Click install and it will begin the installation.

Cheers!
