Help!
Today I tried to play Minecraft. But then at the menu, I closed it down and went on Skype; I thought I'd go on later. Later had arrived but before I went on I thought I'd get a new texture pack. I downloaded Sphax's BDCraft 512x. Then I open Minecraft, drag and drop it in to the folder, and when I go to select the texture pack I had just installed, it freezes. It gets worse. I close it down and try reopening it, I log in and get a black screen. I left it up as I thought it may just have been loading, and a texture appears (the texture in the back round, like dirt with the default). I have a look at my processes and notice I have the 32 bit version of java (I have a 64 bit computer). So I go to the site and download what I believe to be Java 7 64x. Once it's installed I look at my processes and it's still 32 bit. I restarted my computer and it's still saying 32 bit. I tried running Minecraft again but still not working.

For Java to work properly on 64 bit you have to do 2 things:
Download standard Java 32 Bit software and install
Then search for the Java 64 bit software on the java website and download / install that.
When you get to the Java 64 bit page it mentions that the 32 bit install needs to be present before "upgrading".
When I built my new machine Minecraft would freeze completely and my machine would start to hang. And it turns out it was Java! So I did the above and it worked a charm.
Hope this helps!
[EDIT] Just noticed you downloaded the 64 bit version. Sorry I am too busy watching football lol. Did you install the 64 bit version on top of the 32 bit version yea?

You will need the 64-bit java.
If it helps I couldn't get x512 to work and just used x256.

Delete the texture pack anyway, since you played Minecraft before, Java shouldn't be a problem but the texture pack, when you start it up, it automatically picks the last selected texture pack, Sphax.
Delete it, and it re-update, then it should go onto Default and you can play.

"Thats why you need the 128 version or 64 version."

I agree with this... 256x256 and 512x512 is just "overkill"...

Ok, here's an excellent blog by our on ZaphodX... http://www.planetminecraft.com/blog/how ... ft-server/
If you scroll down, you'll see a section on optimizing your system for 64-bit java. That's the info you need to follow!

hold on, there's another thread here somewhere about how to set the Java paths to make sure that your computer's running java 64-bit rather than 32-bit (as it defaults to 32...) let me find it and I'll post the link
