Map Convert Help

Hello, when minecraft 1.2 was released I was quite excited about it, but when I converted my world, it converted my world to a very old version of my world. Is there anyway I can get the latest version of minecraft without having to convert my worlds? Or is there anyway to fix this? Please help. I'm getting bored of playing in 1.1 with very little mods and no multiplayer.

Well the issue here is that Mojang changed the file type that map files are saved as. Orignally, they were saved in a format called "Region", and now they use a format called "Anvil". In addition to doubling the heightmap limit, they changed a lot of the algorithms used to generate worlds. Unless you can find a mod that inserts the new blocks and items into your 1.1 world, I don't believe there is any workaround.
