At the moment, updating minecraft via the client is impossible, as it will freeze mid-update. A few will have "ragequited," under the impression that they can no longer play.
To update Minecraft (until the bug is fixed,) you must update by using minecraft.net, and then you can play normally, modders can mod, and client users can carry on with their games.
Simple, but I just wanted to help clear the confusion and anger.
