Use winRAR or 7ZIP to open minecraft.jar.

7ZIP doesn't cost money and with winRAR after 40 days it asks you to buy winRAR but you can just click out of the window that pops up when opening a winRAR archive file and you don't have to pay :3

inside minecraft.jar there is a folder called meta-inf which is mojangs signed signature of the application.

It is way to ensure that it is unmodified in sense.... but when you do want to modify the jar you must delete that folder

If that is not the issue post what mod(s) you are trying to install and the entire error message.

If your using Windows, I can help. If not sorry .
Your Minecraft.jar file should be there, Minecraft can't function without it.
1. OK so go to your start button or Windows button on your screen and click it.
2. Type Run in the search bar and click on Run.
3. Look for .minecraft and open it.
4. Open your bin folder- This is where people get confused, it doesn't have to say Minecraft.jar but it should at least say Minecraft. Look for the the icon with the java picture in your bin folder and make sure it at least says Minecraft. That should be your MInecraft.jar.
5. If this doesn't work repeat steps 1-2 and delete your .minecraft folder. WARNING this will delete all your MInecraft Mods.
6. Now just open up Minecraft again and repeat steps 1-4.
Hopefully this helped...
