it's not that it has a lot of thumbs up because i've seen many popular things with like one thumbs up (the poster) and 8 thumbs down.

Not entirely. Most people do not upvote a project. This can be seen with the project with the highest upvotes having 160 upvotes and 50,000 views.

you would be correct, though I do not think that Cyprezz has released the algorithm that he uses. It is (as far as I know) a score that is based on views, with the other items counting as multiple views for the most part. This is just my best guess though since, again, Cyprezz has not released the algorithm for it.
its an accumulation of thumbs, favorites, # comments, #dl, #views. in a certain time frame. least thats what i figure it is. lol
