Server setup!

I decided I wanna try making a server again for minecraft (no hamachi) since last time was a bust. I think last time I tried getting in, the port wouldn't connect or something, or my computer wasen't listed in the ports. Is there an easy way to setup a server? I try zaphod's guide and it didn't work near the end. help?
