ok, first get all the graphics files from tour minecraft.jar
put them in a folder.
edit where necesarry but not with paint
when done, select ALL the files/folders, and then add them to a zip.
put the zip in ur texture pack folders and ur done

yeah i like the painterly pack idea the best, that seems the simplest way. if u want to make your own textures you can do what sapphire said

or you could create it a simpler way. go to http://painterlypack.net/ and from there, browse down till' you see a headline saying "How do i get started" click the first red Here that you see and it'll take to you the customizer where you can pick and choose what you want items to look like. create it, go to your minecraft client, open the texture pack folder, move your newly made texture pack in there, and bam! You have your own texture pack!
Go to %appdata% / .minecraft / bin and copy minecraft.jar , paste it to empty file . Then right click on it and extract it . Open extracted file and delete all .class files . Then just edit terrain.png , gui , etc. what ever you want . And your Tp is done .
