Texture Pack Tutorials

Okay so there's texture pack tutorials everywhere and they all basically say the same thing: go into Paint.NET or Photoshop or whatever and create your textures and save them. Well I've done just that, but where do I save them? Or if you have a link to a tutorial that actually says where, I'd be glad to read it.
