SP World missing?

Basically, I logged into Minecraft yesterday, and one of my Single player worlds was just randomly gone?! I have no idea what caused this, so I checked in my save files, and sure enough the world is still there, with all the usual stuff in it! Any ideas? Should I back up an earlier file?
I just want to play that map again, I've worked on it for so long! So any help would be appreciated!

(Computer speak ahead) It is probably a semaphore for the world files to make sure that there are no concurrency issues with saving the files and no race conditions.

With all due respect, computer science tract and its jargon wont fix a broken PC. Kid needs a mechanic, not a programmer or IC designer.

If your machine is powering off like no power.... Either PS is failing----or----> Overheat (if homebuilt, people always put way too much cooler compund on CPU works as heat insulter)-----or---->Capacitors on board failing (bursting) or just failing board -----or---->HD controller failing and RAM should be tested before anything.

Posting your event logs always helps... If there is no listing of crash, than most likely hardware event. (PS,Board,HD,etc) in that order. But regardless of the issue, your HD needs to be checked it not wiped or replaced. Sorry to be too the point, but no amount of posting and responding will fix a hardware issue, powering off is most likely just that.

Good Luck.

Fixing computers has been my job for about 16 years. Your machine crashing or losing power is the real issue, if your hard drive is not fragmented and error'd to hell by now, it could actually be the issue. Yes, hard drives can cause machines to shut down, they can send power back to the PSU. You have machine issues, period and end of line, get it fixed. I run a private server and it crashes from time to time, guess what... maps NOT gone. Fix the machine, maybe reinstall OS, but get the drive checked.

Please dont piss contest me anyone, this kid needs his machine fixed. Dont suggest anything other than that.

Agh! This makes no sense, any reason why the worlds didn't go missing when my computer crashed before?
Think that's all I have to ask now!
Thanks! Any more help appreciated!

If your computer crashes (loses power mostly) while you have a world open, it is toast. This has happened to my moria server world several times which is why I make backups every day or so. Sorry that your worlds got blowed up.

Ok. I tried that, it didn't work. So i restored that.
So it turns out, whilst playing on my other world, my computer crashed. I logged back in, and THAT world was gone too, so yeah, my computer shuts down a whole lot. The save files are still there, but not accessible in the game Singleplayer tab ... Is there any way to retrieve them? Or are they gone for good?

try deleting the session.lock file. That might fix it if minecraft thinks that something else is accessing it and it does not have permission. Hmmm ... basically in the world folder, there are the following folders.
'13' and 'Region'.
And then 'level.dat', 'level.dat_old' ... and 'session.lock'. Hmmm.
My other world's folder has no folder called 13? I tried deleting it, that didn't work. What do you mean unzip? The world folder isn't zipped, no.
Do i need to like restore a previous version of anything? Any more ideas? I still have no idea what caused this!
