The first step to doing anything is find how and what exactly you want to do. After deciding what type of map, and style you want to do, it will become much easier.
Looking at images of real life examples can be pretty helpful for all kinds of creativity, so I recommend doing it at least at the start of each new project.

What do you mean i mean like minecraft maps like droppers or parkour.
ah, You see worldpainter is for making landscape maps for minecraft. But really You should find out what You want to do mapwise. when You got something You can upload it as a 'project' and give a download link. :)
Use WorldPainter. I love that program because of the simplicity of it.
However, if you want to make parkour, Jackob50505 is right: world painter is a landscape making program.
This ^ simple but pretty effective :)
