Apparently a hacker group known as "The Black Hand" is trying to prevent them from releasing the latest update. They are using DDOS methods. Their target is not minecraft.net itself, but the servers that validate your account and allow you to log into Minecraft and play.
In all honesty though I don't think it is anything to worry about. As they will have it fixed soon.
