I believe what makes players stay on a server is the server community. Also, things that other servers don't have are nice.

In my experiences, I don't like them because you like go on and have like the n00b /kit or what not, and people with like op enchanted diamond armor kill you.
I also agree with most of the posts that they are overused and I find them rather boooorrrrrinnngg. What makes a server in my opinion is the community.

After some sort of event, I somehow fell into a concrete hole in the ground and almost got back up, but never could :'/
Thus, I was stuck in the hole for like- ever.
