I have been on a build team before, albeit only joined when it just about to be closed down. Although there was one map that was sold at that time. I was invited via a friend of mine, and my skills at the time was fairly decent to begin with. Once I'd began I was also taught a lot about different techniques and styles.
It would probably be a bit harder to get into a build team compared to back then, especially if you don't have the connections.
But I'll say there would be 2 ways to make it into a job: 1. Make a team yourself, find customers and manage it 2. Join a pre-existing build team
I don't know much about option 1 but option 2 I could suggestion some things.
1 - Make a portfolio: you don't actually have to make a document, make builds share content online, youtube or whatever. just put it somewhere so you can direct them to see your stuff with a hyperlink.
2 - Find build teams you can join, search on disboard, reddit, maybe places where they will advertise their services, you can then find their discord or something, chat them up. You are more likely to get into the smaller ones, for the bigger ones or sometimes the smaller ones you would probably need to submit an application.
Joining a build team is probably the fastest way to do it. Although I recommend building up a library of works to convince them. Building up a good relationship is also a must.
