I would say Java. Windows 10 Edition is about 3-4 dollars more, just because the only way you can buy it is through the 'Starter' and 'Master' collections. Sure its cross-platform, and maybe that's what you want. If most of your friends have Xbox or Pocket editions, then buy Bedrock. Java is not as fun without friends, even though there are many multiplayer servers you can be involved in. I recommend Java because the maps, texture packs, and mods are just BETTER. Recently Microsoft started trying to make money by implementing 'Minecoins' into Bedrock. This means if you want a map, or texture pack you have to pay for it. On Java there are many different sites where you can download these types of things, such as this one! Mods are also a big part of Java, that's one of the main reasons I bought it in the first place. Mods are pretty much obsolete on Bedrock, unless you have mobile, or some third party app. In short Java is highly customizable while Bedrock, not as much. Another thing is that Many tutorial videos are based on Java, and may not work on Bedrock as mechanics are slightly different. But like I said before, you're not going to have as much fun If your not playing with friends. Another reason I bought Java was because most of my friends had it.
