Sounds like a good idea. But i'm pretty sure it would be impossible to do field goals. Also, passing will be VERY difficult to do accurately. And finally, tackling, you could have a clock to a command block looking for damage, so when someone hits you, it will clear your inventory of the football. But the problem with that is if theres a bunch of people it will be about impossible to score.
