you shouldn't use mspaint to make changes to textures since it does not support transparency. at least in windows 7 it does not. neither do you have to put resource packs in .zip files. you can do that but it's not necessary. maybe try redownloading the resource pack

even simpler: right click the .jar file and choose "open with winrar"

you could just ask players not to press f5. if they want to break the illusion they'll find other ways.
