I'm not sure exactly what you mean, most likely because I don't join other servers too often. The ban is a tool of last resort. Anyone who treats it as something different shouldn't be hosting a server.
Also, you as a new player should make sure that you trust your server owner to provide a world save file of whatever you build on the server. That's important to keep someone holding what you've built over your head. If you're not sure what the policy is about world saves, ask when you join.
