I'm Moralous, lead founder of the ChillHub network.
Creating your first server can be fun in a lot of ways, but is also a challenging task if you have had no prior experience. To increase popularity, and ease of use, I recommend using a newer version of Minecraft, on a more "semi-vanilla" style mod, such as Spigot.
Currently, Spigot is available for Minecraft 1.12.2, and they are working hard on a version for 1.13. Spigot allows you to run plugins made for either Bukkit or itself. Plugins are what add commands and other fun stuff to a server, however they cannot add new blocks or items. The benefit of this, however, is that anyone can join without modding their own client.
