ButtsauceCircuit CraftWindows 8 can run Windows 7 programs :/. It's very easy to look at the start screen at a glance. The color coding for each tile makes muscle memory a lot easier.
Oh, yeah. The color-coded start screen is great... if you're a neuroatypical. Or have only a dozen of icons. Or used a smartphone all your life and never touched a PC.
On my old computer I have like 7 CG programs (not even including the entire CS3 suite), six 3D programs, a dozen of games I play regularly and twice as many game-related programs (think Nexus Mod Manager, WryeBash, FTB etc.). Then of course there are countless system-related programs. In Windows 7 I had all of them neatly categorized in the start menu. In Windows 8 I can either turn them into an incomprehensible clusterfu- colorbarf in the bastardized start menu, or put everything on my desktop and create ANOTHER incomprehensible clusterfu- colorbarf, only without the smoooooooth sliding. Either way makes my way hurt.Circuit CraftThe transition from Windows 3.11 to Windows 95 was complete hell, too and Microsoft advertised the start menu sooo much, like how easily you can organize your programs with SUBMENUS, even though program manager was wayy more easier to use.
Sure, but the difference here is that core functions of the program manager were included in Explorer. If you felt like it you could pretty much ignore the start menu and keep using the old thing like you were used to. In Windows 8 this is not possible, because the core feature has been butchered to the point it feels like it's been removed.
I mean, I would be perfectly fine with it if Microsoft said something like "Hey, here's your new Windows! There's this awesome new optional feature to make it look like a smartphone! Oh, what? You despise smartphones and these horrendous clunky buttons? Okay, go back to your old design. Have fun!". Unfortunately, all I'm hearing is "Tablets and smartphones are a growing business nowadays so we are going to design an OS for them. What is it, PC users are going to want a new Windows too? LOL JUST GIVE THEM THE SAME THING. Who cares it's gonna completely dumb down PC's UI. Give them smoooooothly sliding apps and the option to touch their screens (who gives a damn that according to egronomics most people have their screens too far to touch them comfortably!) and they're gonna shut up."
...Unless there's some option (presumably hidden on some retarded sliding sidebar I haven't located yet) that magically replaces the dumbed down start menu with something sensible? If there is, please let me know.
