Well it all comes down to what you run on your server. If you have factions you will want to have a unique twist because theres thousands of faction servers out there and without something unique then your just another server owner lost in thousands of servers with similiar traits,
Next you wat to have a fantastic spawn because you want to give people a first impression that youe server is a hell of alot better than anyone elses server. You need it to impress them upon their first join.
Next you need very matured an capable staff because no on likes having there problems dealt with by 10 year olds who have no idea what theyre doing.
Lastly put the server on every single server site you can think of. Make sure to have an animated banner so it will make your server stand out on the listings. In thr banner include the main features of your server and of course the name because no one will read all of it. Also make sure to keep your server updated and well maintained. Accept donations and add votifier.
Communicate with the players because all the players want a nice community witha decent owner that actually interacts with their players.
Create a website using enjin or buycraft and keep it up to date.
Lastly make sure you have a server image and a nice motd so that it stands out to other servers
