    Pretty much anything except a full fledged desktop is going to be capped due to cooling limitations. That's just the way it is.

    Not really true anymore. In the low budget area, an Intel Pentium is the way to go. They're cheaper than AMD equivalents, and offer greater single-threaded performance. They also use less power, so you can get a slightly less powerful PSU, and use the extra money saved from the processor and power supply to get a higher-end GPU.

    At this point in time, the only thing AMD is significantly better at than Intel is making integrated graphics.


    But hen there's all of the raw power left over for future support. Also, you can do a lot of upgrading with not a lot of cash. Unlike Intel these days, AMD likes to stay with a single socket until it is outdated. Also, there's backwards compatibility for the AM3 standard, so your investment in AM3 didn't go to waste. Also, yes, you will need a better PSU, but that's an extra $20... They're also barely cheaper. There's about a $20 difference in the cheapest FX and Pentium... I think future support is worth $20, but I don't know about y'all.

    I would say that AMD is pretty good to a low budget gamer.... Or... At least... More so than Intel.

    If you're going for something that cheap, you might want to go with an AMD FX based PC. The good thing about all of the new FX sockets is that you can start low and go higher, A 990FX chipset motherboard (~$60-$200 reasonably) can support a lower-line FX CPU (~$60) all the way up to the overkill beast in my machine (~$180) if you get the money. Plus, if you don't have the money for a whole new CPU, you can get a good cooling system and overclock the living daylights out of the current CPU. (the cheapest FX CPU is still better than your current or planned CPU, by the way.)

    My point here is that for budget computers, AMD is superior by far.
