I run EggCatcher and MonsterBox on my server and you can do exactly what you are describing. In no way do I consider it cheating. In fact, if you have the skill and desire to farm larger than average quantities of wither skulls and thereby nether stars, I encourage you to do so. Overall, the game balancing implications of such modifications have minimal effect on PVP, particularly if no additional economy plugins are present which would allow you to exchange items into currency. If economy plugins are present a value adjustment to wither skulls or nether stars might be taken into consideration.

It is very polite of you to have considered the ethics of the situation in the first place, so you seem like a fair and valuable member of that community. That said, it is of course at the discretion of individual owners/servers and perhaps even defined by the technical limitations of their plugins. (ie, some mob egg plugins have no way of regulating that behavior)

    Crossbows!

Have them in two states, uncocked and cocked. They should take a little longer to cock than it takes to draw a bow, but have the projectile fire instantly from cocked state, have it travel farther and with a flatter trajectory.

Nothing over-complicated. No damn iron crossbow or explosive bolts or all that bs, just 1 simple wooden crossbow that uses regular arrows.

WillyWonka125And applying the stereotype that 12 year olds own all the small servers isn't fair. I'm 16 (Still a child, I guess)

I just have to comment that I think this particular statement shows great character. I think it takes a great deal of confidence and self awareness to refer to oneself as a child. The word is too often used derogatorily and I'm definitely guilty of doing that but it's younger people like yourself that remind me that I'm wrong. There isn't anything wrong with being young and although in a legal sense a person is an "adult" once they turn 18 many people behave immaturely throughout most of their 20's as well. It is a small bit of irony that being able to see yourself as a child is part of what makes you an adult and I'm willing to bet your perspective is part of what sets you ahead of your peers.

I can relate a little to that. On my own server I do feel a little irate when someone tells people to leave and join a different server, then everyone jumps ship and you're down from 16 people to 4. I think that isn't really a cool thing to do on any server. I'll also admit that when I catch someone xraying I literally FLIP THE F OUT and tell them what a complete piece of human waste I think they are just prior to banning them, their ip, and rolling everything they ever touched back. On rare occasions someone will tell me to calm down or be more professional and I just can't rationalize it. I do demand that everyone in the entire Minecraft community be enraged at the presence of cheaters and I only wish there was a way for me to close their entire account so they could never play Minecraft again anywhere.

I definitely echo previous posters sentiment on pay-to-win. I see it as utter contempt for the players and I can't support that business model in the slightest. Donations should only result in aesthetic options such as name colors or titles and have absolutely zero impact on any balance or ingame mechanics.

This. In Minecraft the average player age is around 14 years old. The resulting combination of limited social development, communication skills, and lack of experience with the responsibility associated with power over people is just a storm of disparity.

Fortunately their attention spans are equally limited and they will probably only be running a server for a month or two before they move on to whatever catches their interest next.

While browsing for servers you can just disregard any server that's been open for less than a month and try to find a place that will be open for years. As some of these other guys have said though, some of the kids running servers are ahead of their age and can manage things with a fair degree of commitment and integrity. For every good server though there are 10 bad servers made by people who don't take the responsibility seriously.

I think the server should be called Gangs of New York. Call the city Five Points, and make the factions Natives vs Dead Rabbits.

Also, Montagues vs Capulets is an option.

Number one request I would have:
A bukkit plugin that gives you a tool to tap chests with that randomly fills them with loot from a config file.
There are plugins that do similar kinds of things (ChestRestock, PhatLoots) but not without having to modify the chest, add it to a list of special chest etc. I just want to whack it with my loot stick and move on.

I suppose you are talking bout SP mods with more drastic kinds of changes though?

I liked it. I felt it wasn't too far off from SMB64, which in my opinion was the greatest SMB of all time.

I think part of the problem with it was just the platform. It's difficult for people to say Sunshine was a good game while at the same time acknowledging Gamecube itself wasn't really amazing.

    Beta 1.2

I was so excited when Wolves were added. I could not have imagined how far we have come.

Personally, my preference is for as little world protection as possible. That's how I run my own server. I just have this feeling that too much grief protection ruins the feeling of freedom in minecraft. That being said, an attitude of zero tolerance and instant permanent bans for people using cheats is also required.

You may be looking at building a more cooperative kind of environment though with pvp disabled and more prevalent use of protected regions. There are so many personal preferences to Minecraft. I think it might be helpful to know what you personally like. After all, as the server owner I imagine you want to build the perfect server to suit your own tastes as a player, which I think is perfectly fine, since there are plenty of servers to suit people who like what you might not.

In general thought I suppose #1 thing every server MUST have; an admin team that responds quickly to technical issues players may encounter.

Best of luck to you and your community!

    Definitely Lucy from Elfen Lied.

I'd post a link to some clips but they would probably get me banned.

I have to agree that most Minecraft servers don't have the real feeling of playing normal survival. In my opinion the game has been ruined with things like Worldguard, mcmmo, towny, etc. There is nothing worse that joining a server and logging in to some gaudy spawn hub with no breakable blocks within 1000m. Then there's always some terrible massive wall of rules on how to acquire items you would normally just be able to mine or farm. Add in things like /tpa so that traveling becomes insignificant. Add /home so that kids don't even have to craft a bed, which seems like an amazingly simple process people feel the need to bypass.
If you can find a good vanilla server though that has anti-cheat but not massive protected regions, I think it still feels the same. I don't have any desire to go back to earlier versions, I would miss new things like horses and roofed forests. And I wouldn't even consider playing something from back in the days before enchanting and brewing.
What destroyed most of Minecraft was the cheaters. If 95% of MC players weren't little xraying punks we could still have a decent game without worldguard being so prevalent. If Mojang would take an interest in eliminating cheating the vanilla style community would thrive once again.
