general knowledge of how commands work
drive and time to be able to learn and apply new skills to your map
patience to do boring things, like completely rebuilding something in order to make it less laggy.

edit: add world painter to the list

Yeah, I was a little afraid of that.
What about programs like Avanti! or Minecraft Editor, are they worth learning?
I only ask because I'm basically envisioning terramorphing on a fairly large scale coupled with detail building on an equally large scale, and World Painter doesn't exactly seem easy to achieve fine detail with (like building an epic valley or amazing mountain)

I mean you could always just make a procedural world with world machine, but if you already know how you want you map set up, world painter is probably your best bet.

Building in game is fun, idk why you are avoiding it. Doing it "faster" or "easier" isn't going o get you better results. Building in-game is going to give your map more detail as compared to doing it in something like mcedit.

Building in-engine is fun, yes, but it's not the most efficient use of effort.
I guess my biggest problem with building the world right now is that SinglePlayerCommands doesn't seem interested in updating to 1.8, and it grants me a LOT of necessary tools (like worldedit) that the regular game doesn't offer.

Find Them CreepersMcEdit is what most people use. It's kind of redundant though now that command blocks are really powerful.

The saddest thing is that I USED to love McEdit until the latest 1.7.1 build made it so terribly optimized that it's basically unusable. I have a great computer, I just... MCE can't even run a filter or recalculate lighting without basically crashing for six minutes.

    Ah, that's the truth.
Besides, if OP really wants internet friends, he ought to pick a better medium. Finding decent mature people who play Minecraft is like swimming through an ocean of shit to find a single nugget of gold.

To the sane, it isn't worth it, but some people just really like gold...
