You really decide Gimp is better for its Shade/Burn effect,
BUT if you know how you can also achieve this effect in paint.net.*

    * I posted a comment on this and how to do it :] on page 7

I actually know a few good ways to shade in Paint.net that are a tad bi complicated but i love the effect

    Here's how i do it:
    1. -Figure out what type of shading you want light or dark.
    2. -Now Choose the "Grey scale" Portion -or- Just Go to what ever color you're using.
    3. - now choose on the dark/lightening scale thing go to [dark] or [lighter] color
    4. -now this is the smudge / burn effect. Turn The transparency to a near low or medium. This enables the smudge/burn effect without affecting the original "base" color.
    5. - Shade away!
    6. TAKE TIME! its crucial so you dont mess up *
    * using a brush at 1 point tip will make it useful to unwanted areas of shadinbg so you dont mess up :]

Really, The most Problem skinners have is with shading and finding the right tool to use.
Mainly i use Pain.net for my shading purposes and i think it turns out really good.
1 Tip for all skinners: Try not to overuse shading it will start to look like the character is either to dark or to light in areas.
also Skinning is Hard without a muse. If you have a thing for Steampunk stick with it,
If you have a thing for Gaming Charters stick with it, its all up to you and how much your brain can handle certain things and styles.

-Also Currently occurring is that the underside textures in skins [For the head and hat portion] will have a Normal underside texture in the previewer, but In-Game its screwed up and backwards. ANY SKIN MADE BEFORE 1.0 WILL HAVE THIS EFFECT! So now every "awesome skin" will have this glitch and therefore it'll look bad. all i have to say is that all Previewers have to be updated
