I don't think anyone starts off good at making skins. I still shit bricks while I'm making stuff, and have to base it off other's stuff. Art takes practice, just like everything else. Though, if you want to learn a little faster, I suggest studying pixel art. Look real close at it and see what makes the shapes work- how colors blend to make something you can visualize, even though it's pixels.
