These are my first and only two villagers. The next closest villagers are in the town where I caught these two, which is a few hundreds meters away.

I've seen the hearts animation after being fed, but I don't think I've seen any other particles or stuff... however, I usually leave the place asap because I think I read somewhere they might not breed if you're too close?

    Thanks for your help!

    They won't breed I'm afraid.

Here's the underground enclosure where they are:

And here's the outside, with the distance to the village where I got them, cause I don't know if that's a factor:

One of them escaped for a moment and was able to claim a smoker I had nearby. Even after breaking it, he won't leave that profession. On the other hand, I built a lectern for the other villager, he claimed it and when I broke the lectern, he lost his profession. So I'm not sure how these mechanics work.

In any case, the main issue here is they won't breed no matter how much bread I give them.

If I can't breed villagers I don't see the point in keep playing cause I don't see how you could possible enchant your tools consistently without this "exploit". By fishing, looting and table enchanting it woul take literally hundreds of hours, and the same can be said of standard trading with villagers.

Hope you people can help me.

    Thanks again for your time.

    Thanks to all of you!

I'm currently checking possible small mistakes I could made re pathfinding, bed placement and so on, cause after a few days of giving them tons of bread, they still won't breed.

But yeah, hopefully I'll make it eventually.

    Cheers.

Thanks a lot for your detailed answer.

I'll have to keep my cattle under roof then.
