maybe he could add augmentations? that you find in dungeons or craft with certain blocks like a sword could have a damage augmentation and a pick can have a mining augmentation to make it mine faster or be able to mine certain ores (like an iron pick can mine obsidian)
yeah, I'm not too happy about NPCs that's what mods are for but still if he does add NPCs then he might as well make it a separate mode to keep most people satisfied that they can still play the true minecraft
