Give everyone a better idea of what I am working on. A datapack with quests to help new players learn the game and to give old players a challenge and ideas of things to do. The quests are broken down into 11 phases. Complete all tasks in one phase to advance to the next. Phase 1 has 3 sub sections. Stack collecting, mob killing and item collecting. 84 quests in all so far. I have 33 of those quests working. Just need to keep adding some daily and don't over exert the old tired brain.

Wow, been 3 years. I am not dead and neither is my dream. Restructuring everything for 1.21.10. Reading my previous posts, seems like I was so close. Why did I stop? Anyway, back at it finally.

So the passion would not allow me to put my project on hold. I started all over again. I slowly began moving 1 directory, 1 file, 1 command at a time. I made sure everything worked before adding the next thing so that I didn't get ahead of myself. I discovered that the load.json runs before the player is loaded. So just by delaying a bunch of my commands by 1 second made everything work. I just finished disabling all of vanilla's advancements, 1,046. I plan on making my own and don't want the player getting confused and overwhelmed with both set achievements being active. Now to start making my own.

I think my project may be put on hold. Even though I made some good advancements, there are just too many hurdles right now. Too much not working and too many things I don't know how to do or even it they are possible.

Achievements coming along. Achievements trigger rewards. Rewards are just points on scoreboards. Scoreboards track players progress. Progress triggers loot tables which is the real reward. All coming along. It is just the little things I can't figure out. mcfunction files is where the real potential is supposed to be. But I am so confused as to why a command works in one place and not the other. I could not get title to work until I put schedule in front of it. Why won't it work without the schedule? Why won't give work? It is such a simple command. Like I thought all Minecraft commands worked in mcfunction files. But no, but sometimes, buy why? Ugh. So I am just working on the main part of the pack and hope the little stuff I'll figure out later.

So was trying to get my main data pack to enable and disable other data packs with the datapack command. Each data pack had it's own full set of loot tables. The first only allowed dirt to drop, the second allowed, sand, gravel, coarse dirt, red sand and clay to drop. As the player progressed, the main pack was to switch secondary packs allowing more blocks to drop items. The whole problem was that I couldn't get the datapack command to work. Then found out there is a much simpler way of doing this. Add conditions to my loot table. That way I only have one set of loot table in one data pack. Much simpler. Well, sort of. Seems I first need to create a scoreboard to keep track of the players progress. Then have a predicate that checks the scoreboard. Then have my loot tables check the predicate. Seems a bit complicated but that apparently is how it is all done?

Getting this datapack to work more the way I want it to instead of just working. The final thing I believe is figuring out how to get the datapack to communicate with the player so that the player knows what is expected of them and what they should be striving for. Book? Advancements? Sidebar scoreboard? Action bar? I am leaning towards action bar but have to play with it some more to see it's limitations.

Seems to have been some changes from 1.17 to 1.18 that caused my advancements to not work properly. Finally figured it all out. Trying to cause an advancement to run some functions. Slowly getting there.

Finished editing the files for the loot tables. However, these were for 1.17. Going to acquire the loot tables for 1.18.1 and merge the 2. Then edit all the new 1.18.1 files.

So yeah. I got lost in playing FTB Revelation modpack. Life has been rough with covid and work. The stress is destroying what little I have left of this brain. Today I got back into editing the loot_tables. I see that they added a bit more to the directory of data pack structure. Will look into that later. I can't move forward until I finish these loot tables.

Was pushing the old brain too much and had to take a break. About half way through editing the loot tables. Discovered "Feed The Beast - Endeavor" mod pack and have been playing around with it. Came across a mod pack with a working Title. So been meaning to investigate it to see how they got theirs to work. just wanted to check in so the few of you who are following me know I haven't given up.

Began editing 870 loot_tables. Good grief I set myself up for an enormous job. No pain, no gain.

So after running into one of those barriers with settings, I decided to work on advancements which I understand pretty good. I decided I wanted different backgrounds and found out you can do that with a texture pack (also called resource pack). Their directory set up is almost identical to how you set up one for a data pack. So I thought maybe I could combine the 2??? Nope. Darn. So now I am working with data packs and texture packs. But I love the new backgrounds!!! Section 1 of advancements completed but there are only 8 advancements. The next section will have around 80. I created the root just to get then next section up to play around with the background. Not 100% happy with it so will try experimenting next chance I get. Lots of work needs to be done around the house so not sure how much time I'll have this weekend to work on it.

Progress! Figured out how to get functions to repeat themselves without tying up the tick routine. Make a timer.mcfunction file, use a schedule command within that file to repeat itself every so often. Then use function commands for all the functions that need to repeat themselves.

Now to get the program to check settings instead of setting them every 3 seconds. Only need to be set if not set where I desire them to be. Players won't like this evilness but there is no point if you are going to cheat.

Wow, this is tough. It looked easy as I was watching videos and learning. However, tweaking all of this to work perfectly and efficiently is brutal.

Title and subtitle routine I thought was perfect. However, I only ever tested it using the /reload command. However, later starting a new game, the title and subtitle failed to show. I did the /reload command and boom, there it was. So, need to get this routine to trigger by player's action?

Next, I added 2 functions that would continually set game mode to survival and difficulty to normal. I don't need these to run 20 times a second so I tried using the schedule command, but the schedule just gets reset 20 times a second so it never runs the functions. So I guess I have to run my own slower routine from the load routine instead of the tick routine.

Okay, here I go. Officially started on my data pack. Title and subtitle timing completed. Also, started my own github page. And..., going with a screen name change here so it all ties in together and will make more sense.

So you think you just learn the 68 commands that are used in mcfunction files and your good to go? haha, NO!. Did you know there are types of variables that are called arguments? Here is a definition of an argument related to computer science:

is the actual input expression passed/supplied to a function, procedure,
or routine in the invocation/call statement, whereas the parameter is the variable inside the implementation of the subroutine.

    WADU HEK?

How am I or anyone else supposed to learn this stuff with definitions like that? There are 41 command argument types such as block_pos. On top of that there are these things called traits which use the [ ] brackets in code. I believe there are only 7 of these.

For now, these are the new barriers. However, I am poking holes into these barriers with each video I find and watch. I just don't speak the geek language they do so it is hard to follow sometimes.

The funny thing is which you all have no idea..., yet. I do this at work where I am a gate guard. 600 visitors a day I get. That and phone calls, radio traffic and alarms I have to monitor. The interruptions drive me crazy sometimes. I constantly have to remind myself that my job pays for everything I have so it is always priority. However, my brain gets wiped by lunch time from trying to multitask which I am horrible at. At home is a little better. However, even there I have a wife and dog that require attention too. And they too are priority over learning this. My old and tired mind requires lots of breaks so at work I play Minecraft in peaceful mode. At home I jump on a server and play. Right now I am watching an episode of the Walking Dead I forgot to watch from Sunday. And I just now saw the wife pull up from her day at work. So, got to go once again. Priorities call.

the work you put into learning this is astonishing. I can’t imagine all the work you go through but you’re doing a really good job. I commend you!

According to Minecraft Wiki, there are 11 directories in a data pack's nameSpace directory. I have a good understanding now of what goes in all of them.

There are also 68 commands. I have learned what each one does. Most of them I have no use for.

As I learn what is what, I write down myself notes. Very detailed notes so that when I go back over them, it is like reading a text book. I think beside learning this stuff myself, I may also post my notes so that others may learn this stuff to.

Scoreboard is fully functional. Basically 6 boards in 1. Next is to get the data pack to set up the game settings. Turn cheats off and stuff like that.

The project I have in mined is huge. The time I have to work on it is very little. I am not even bothering making it for 1.16.5. I'm building it for 1.17. I still have a lot to learn and not sure everything I want this project to do will be possible. Like turning cheats off. Can that be done with a data pack? I have discovered this project will require separate packs, 14 so far, to work. My grandson thinks it will be epic if I can pull it off. Not as epic as RLCraft which is where a lot of my inspiration came from. There is nothing this huge out there in data pack form and there may be a good reason for it. Like, it might possibly that it is not possible. I just need to keep watching videos and learning, putting together as much as possible for now.

Currently working on getting multiple scoreboards working.

Got multiple boards working in the background doing the actual counting. The main one displays as a sidebar. Just need to work on the code to connect the ones counting to the one displaying.
