Poetry is a bad idea
To think that we communicate with words that have two meanings
When they could flow so symmetrically from the caves of our lips
Like codes, communicating but not communicating
Meaning to say but hiding away
To think that we would rather accept our cowardly secrets rather than unfold with certainty
Poets write for the purpose of perspective and perspective varies from person to person and whether they mean it or not
Their words can cause the very things they fight against
Poets write about trees representing rocks and throwing that rock into the pond of society to make it ripple into beauty
But what if, I look at that tree and in that tree I see the most hideous bird and I shoot that bird
Those thoughts don’t normally cross the minds of poets because
What if, Plato’s Dialogues actually depicted communism instead of democracy and the Iliad depicted the heroic defense of Troy instead of the glorious attacks of the greeks.
Wars were fought over words and ideas and people will kill each other in the name of their religion but what if
War and destruction wasn’t the intention
Yes, we as humans should believe in expressing ourselves
Yes, we require a way to vent our frustrations and cry through the dark soot and rubble and sometimes hiding behind our false words and confused expressions is easier
But life isn’t about being easy
Because if we push back the problems like congress did with the slaves it will make the future suffer
And why else do we exist if not to make the future better
We write poetry to express ourselves, us poets and sometimes we make out to be the villains of sweet courage
But I guess all I’m trying to say is let the tree be a tree to save a life because
Do we really know the dangers it could cause centuries ahead when a young little child stumbles across your writings, your poems and sees that beautiful tree that you depicted and that rippling water in the pond
And decides to shoot the bird
