To edit any of the specific information about your minecraft server, you will need to go to the server.properties file. You can open this in Notepad.

    #Minecraft server properties
    #Sat Apr 21 20:16:13 CDT 2012
allow-nether=(True/False) Depends on if you want the Nether to be allowed
level-name=(Can be whatever you want. If you want to load a certain type of map, load the file into this folder and call this what the map is called. For example, you have a map called TokyoPoliceClub, that is what this should be)
enable-query=false (Not quite sure what this does)
allow-flight=(True/False) This option just depends on if you want flight to be allowed on your server, with either creative mode, or other mods.
server-port=25565 (The default is 25565, if you want to host other servers, change this on the other server.properties file.)
    level-type=DEFAULT
enable-rcon=false (This option is just asking if you want a special type of admin)
level-seed= (If you dont want to load a map, but do want a seed, then put the seed in here)
server-ip= (Normally, this is left blank, you shouldnt need to put anything in here.)
max-build-height=256 (This is how high people are allowed to build on your server. Making it more than 256 could be sketchy though)
spawn-npcs=(True/False) This option is if you want Villagers to spawn
white-list=(True/False) This option is if you want to have to add people to a list before they can play on the server.
spawn-animals=(True/False) This option is if you want animals to spawn on your server.
online-mode=(True/False) Normally, this is just left on True.
pvp=(True/False) This option lets people kill each other if set to true,
difficulty=1 (This is normally left at 1.)
gamemode=0 (If you want to have a creative mode server, change this to 1.)
max-players=20 (The default is 20, if you want/think you need more, feel free to change it. Since its hosted on your computer, then it might be laggy after a few people)
spawn-monsters=(True/False) This option is if you want mobs to spawn
generate-structures=(True/False) This option is if you want random villages and so on to spawn
view-distance=10 (The default of this option is left at 10.
motd= (This can be anything you want it to be. Its what shows up under a server name and above the ip address on the listing. You could make it say, KillerPro is the best if you wanted.

okay cool. it should be simple then.

The first thing that you need to do is open up some ports on your router, so other people can connect to your server.
To do this with your specific router, check out this website.http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DSL-2740U/Minecraft_Server.htm

Then, after you've opened up those ports, is the easy part.

Click the download link at https://s3.amazonaws.com/MinecraftDownload/launcher/Minecraft_Server.exe
to download the server file. After you have downloaded it, open it, and it should make a few files to give information about your server.

    Favorite types.

Projects: I like community projects, where everyone is doing their own thing to help make a small town or something.
Texture Packs: I enjoy High Def texture packs. I really only use 256x256 ones anymore.
Skins: I like skins that I have made myself. It's a good feeling that you made it, and no one else matches you.
Servers: I enjoy every kind of server. Mainly, Prison servers or survival servers.
Blogs: I don't really follow any blogs.
Mods: I haven't gotten too in depth with mods yet. Ill get back to you on that.

If you use a router, just go into the config page of your router at (default) 192.168.0.1.

Depending on the type of router, the pages will be different.

if it asks for a specific computer ip, go to the command prompt, type ipconfig, and look for the 192.168.0.XXX. Type the XXX (should be a three numbers).

Changing the port that your server hosts on might help the problem.

    That should get you started.
