Mark your calendars for tomorrow, October 13th, 7 AM central time for the launch of Starship IFT-5

If there's any rocket launch you absolutely NEED to watch its this one

If they manage to pull this off it will geniunely be one of the greatest engineering achievements in human history

so i’m sure you guys have heard of the astronauts “stranded” in space by boeing right now

if you haven’t, boeing sent a crew of 2 astronauts to the international space station in june on a 6 day mission. Almost 3 months later they’re still up there because there was an engine problem and boeing can’t figure out what happened

Well, we now know what’s going to happen to the crew

they’re going to be rescued by spacex lmao

So in 2025 SpaceX is going to send the Crew-9 mission to the ISS. This was already going to happen, but now they’re going to rescue the Boeing Starliner crew as well
    FBreakDance302024-08-26 14:05:45
Boeing: Astronouts, i need your help we need to go on a quick adventure. Let's go, in and out, 6 days adventure.
    3 months later: ...
    Kypickle2024-08-24 14:08:26
but to do this crew-9 needs extra room
so they’re kicking 2 astronauts off the mission
so boeing not only strnaded people in space for months but have now ruined the opportunity for 2 people to go to aoace

if you can’t tell already this is a MASSIVE mess for boeing

NASA just made one of the stupidest decisions they’ve ever made and we need to get congress to reverse it
I never ask this on my posts but before I get into this I very humbly ask you to share this wherever you can. To put this simply if we don’t get this mission to happen, space exploration gets set back decades

The VIPER rover was supposed to be a lunar rover launching this year to search for ice on the lunar south pole for 100 days. Finding ice is critical to making a moon base where people can live.

However, it was being launched on the Griffin-1 mission, made by the company Astrobotic, which recently failed to land on the moon with the peregrine 1 mission

So, because of cost overruns and the lack of confidence in Griffin-1, NASA has chosen to end the development of the VIPER rover.

Despite the fact that the rover is ALREADY FULLY BUILT

NASA is literally going to throw away VIPER and sell its parts to other companies for different missions

and not only that, but because of how the contract works, NASA STILL HAS TO PAY FOR THE LAUNCH OF GRIFFIN-1

So they are literally paying Astrobotic to launch NOTHING to the moon (of course griffin-1 will have other payloads but none are nearly as important)

and if that wasn’t enough, instead of putting VIPER on Griffin-1, they’re going to put a mass simulator, meaning they are literally attaching dead weight to the spacecraft where VIPER is supposed to be

Even if you don’t like space exploration, this decision is completely indefensible. Spending 450 million dollars on a rover just to cancel it at the goal line is inexcusable and a complete and utter waste of money.

please sign this letter to Congress here to reverse this absurd decision: https://nasawatch.com/artemis/an-open-letter-to-congress-opposing-viper-cancellation-that-you-can-sign/
    Dronko fire blaster2024-07-23 04:02:24
I did it. I swear the amount of money wasn't by the government is insane, like projects that get hundreds of millions put in to them to be canceled.

today i learned that Artemis 2 and Artemis 3 (the next 2 missions to the moon with people on them, launching in 2025 and somewhere before 2028 respectively) will be outfitted with cameras capable of making a 4K 60fps livestream of the entire mission
they’ll be on the Artemis 3 spacesuits as well, the next moon landings will be in 4K let’s gooooo
    Kypickle2024-07-05 14:08:46
though artemis 2 is only an orbiting mission, artemis 3 is the actual landing
    but still very fun

    forgot to post this yesterday
Starship (the biggest rocket ever made) has successfully survived a full reentry back to Earth.

    youtu.be/vF_RNoTUuDA?si=dyG-wHHwcpJtY5tn

    www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrkYmUoOMOQ

    This is huge
This isn’t just a SpaceX achievement. This isn’t just “oh wow the most powerful rocket ever survived”
This is history in the making
Starship was burning up in the atmosphere, no other rocket has ever survived that
And Starship, despite literally disintegrating, managed to make a successful landing
This is not only the most powerful rocket ever, it is the strongest
it quite literally became a meteor and survived
no other rocket has ever done that
this was the problem that killed the space shuttle Columbia, and Starship lived
While this happened, multiple engines were failing and it STILL SURVIVED
remember where you were on June 6th, because this is more than just a rocket
this type of history you tell your children that you lived through
this is the rocket that will build a moon base and send people to mars
    and it’s now operational
    IGEBM2024-06-07 07:35:02
I didn’t even know about this (the rocket itself)

    Holy carp that’s incredible
    spookyshxdow2024-06-07 06:50:50
i was worried something would happen w/ the engines failing or some other issue, but everything worked out 🎉
    Kypickle2024-06-07 06:43:41
should also mention that as starship was burning up there was ONE wing flap that steered the ENTIRE ship, flipped it upright, and allowed for a successful landing
the flap’s connection to the ship was GONE, it was hanging on by a thread
and it not only operated, but operated well enough to land the whole damn ship
spacex have built a goddamn monster

IF YOU HAVE ECLIPSE GLASSES, GO OUTSIDE AND LOOK AT THE SUN RIGHT NOW

There is currently a dark spot on the surface of the Sun visible as a black dot, it’s called AR3664
These sunspots happen very often but ones this big are very rare, and this one is visible without a telescope

this sunspot is also releasing massive solar flares that will cause auroras to be visible in northern US states and all of canada

this is extremely rare, STARE DIRECTLY AT THE SUN RIGHT NOW (if you still have eclipse glasses)
    whimsykit2024-05-11 11:12:18
im in a kind of southern state and saw the auroras

so here’s two fun facts i learned about saturn today that just prove that this planet is the physical embodiment of chaos

    1. saturn’s biggest moon, titan, is currently moving away from saturn. As it does, saturn’s obliquity (it’s axial tilt, which is just how tilted the planet is toward the sun) will increase. This increase then destabilizes titan’s orbit, which causes it to move away further, which causes the obliquity to increase more, in a feedback loop that will eventually
-eject titan from the system entirely, flinging it off into space
-cause saturn to flip on its side, like uranus is today
we don’t know when this will happen but we know it will (it will probably be between 1-100 billion years from now)

    and
    2. Saturn’s moon Hyperion has a chaotic rotation. Earth takes 24 hours to complete one rotation, and it’s very stable.
    Hyperion is not

Hyperion’s day length and axial tilt constantly changes chaotically and unpredictably due to interactions with saturn and the other moons. This is so chaotic that it becomes physically impossible to predict where hyperion will be more than a month in advance
Even with things like supercomputers, we genuinely have no idea how long a day on hyperion will be or how tilted it will be more than 1 month from today

fun fact: there is a US law that prevents NASA from working with the Chinese National Space Agency (CNSA) in any capacity whatsoever

NASA and CNSA are literally prohibited from working together by law

China has a space station, Mars rovers, has landed several things on the Moon, and has a successful human spaceflight program

Now, where have I heard of 2 extremely capable spacefaring nations working against each other before?

fun fact: there is an area on the Moon called the Sea of Moscow that was discovered by (who would’ve guessed) Russia in the 1960s

however, the rules for naming places on the Moon said that you couldn’t name them after anything political, and the city of Moscow fell under that category

but the soviet union was determined
so they argued that the city of Moscow was “a state of mind” and so not political

    and it WORKED

your daily reminder that the United States Space Force has a classified “fleet” of space planes very similar to the Space Shuttle but with no crew and they only do military stuff

they’re called X-37s and every once and a while one will launch, stay in orbit for a few months, and come back down
what they do up there is classified
we have no idea what is on board

(it’s probably just spy satellites and stuff but i like to tell people this because as much as people like to joke about the Space Force, it’s a serious organization that actually does stuff)

so i’m sure you guys know boeing at this point
the airplane company that keeps having doors fall off their planes and other wacky events

well a lot of people don’t know that Boeing is also a space company and has launched things into space

and now they’re working on the first crewed flight test of Boeing Starliner, which is a new vehicle meant to take people to the International Space Station

let’s go over a brief history of Boeing Starliner because it is the worst crewed spacecraft since Apollo 13

the first flight test of Starliner occurred in 2019, it didn’t have people on it and was just trying to get to the ISS
It was almost ready to approach the ISS and then MISSED

the second test, also with nobody on it, went fine a few years later
keep in mind that Boeing wanted people on Starliner in 2018. It’s now 2024 and a crewed flight test is just now about to happen

istg if Boeing kills a bunch of astronauts I think that’ll just be the end of the company
the first company to kill someone in space
    let’s hope that doesn’t happen
    Ace3012024-04-22 20:28:30
Goodbye. Hope ya make it, fellow humans. If not... eh... what is Boeing gonna do, shrug if off like it didn't happen?
    IGEBM2024-04-22 07:43:36
    Boeing is doomed lol

I feel sorry for the poor saps that are (hopefully) willingly boarding a potential flight of death…

time to perform ritualistic sacrifices to Artemis, Selene, Chang’e, Chandra, and whatever other moon gods i can think of for the successful landing of the VIPER rover sometime this year
dear god this thing needs to succeed
we aren’t sending humans back to the moon without it

Almost thought you were saying performing ritual sacrifices with them as the sacrifice, but that makes no sense in your context... :)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtdcdxvNI1o
an interview with Neil Armstrong about what being on the Moon was actually like (what the sky was like, could they see stars, what did the surface look like, etc)
    interesting stuff

ofc the saddest part was when he said that he expected to have lunar bases in the near future
50 years later and here we are
not even the most pessimistic people about space wouldve guessed that we wouldnt have had a base on the Moon by now

luckily we have the Artemis Program now at least

lots of news about china’s plans to put people on the moon today

    1. their Chang’e 8 mission (launching 2028) plans to use lunar material to build bricks in preparation to build a larger base on the moon

    2. China’s spacecrafts they’re planning to use to send people to the Moon now have names, Mengzhou (the thing they will use to go to the moon) and Lanyue (the lander)

    things are happening
dont be surprised if china sends people to the moon before 2030
my guess is 2029 or 2030 for chinese crewed moon landings
things are about to get fun
