No need to be rude, people are just trying to help. Sure, some may not be the most knowledgeable but at least everybody's trying and no one insulted anyone else based upon what they had previously written... Until you came along.

I'm not sure what was particularly rude about my post nor did I intend it to be rude. My post was intended to be purely informational (perhaps a bit ranty). There is nothing helpful about spreading misinformation.
While it's true that performance may be reduced on a VPS due to the Vcores being distributed throughout the entire server bank, most (if not all) companies that offer VPS services give the customer a baseline usage percentage in their plan - for example, for paying $39.95 a month you will get a gigabyte of RAM, four Vcores, 25 gigabytes of SSD storage space, and 1000 gigabytes total of data transfer from one company.

This is what I was implying when I said "You may be able to allocate a fixed amount of disk capacity and RAM". My apologies if it was not worded very well.
No need to come into a thread and be rude to people if all you're doing is addressing mistakes that others may have made and barely scratching the surface of the queries the original poster wrote about.

Once again, not trying to be rude and aside from the last comment which was more of a rant than anything, I don't see what was rude.
Addressing the misinformation of others is very much related to the queries of OP, addressing that 16GB is more than enough for most servers, and that home-hosting can be completely effective. This is exactly what the title is asking, so I'm not sure what your point is here.

Even though the CPU is the most important component? This makes no sense whatsoever. You can have a symmetrical 10-gigabit line, 192GB of DDR4 RAM and the fastest of phase-change SSD storage... but if your processor is an overclocked Pentium 4 HT then your server will struggle with more than 3 players.

Seriously the misinformation going on around here just shows how computer-illiterate the Minecraft community can be.

Storage is measured in bytes, bandwidth (this is what internet speed is measured in) is measured in bits.

    Megabytes per second = MB/s
    Megabits per second = Mbps

The strange misconception between server owners that you need 16GB of RAM to host any kind of server is rediculous. It may be a bit of an anecdote, but my server uses about 1.5GB of RAM with a full 24 players online. My server is heavily optimized, but it's nothing that limits gameplay, just tweaking the right settings (and by this I do not mean copy & pasting some kids "improve your performance launch script").

Some other words of wisdom: Don't run any serious server on a VPS, especially not any "minecraft server host". You may be able to allocate a fixed amount of disk capacity and RAM, but CPU usage is much more dynamic and therefore cannot be allocated in the same way. When you get a "core" on a VPS, you are not getting a dedicated core of the server's CPU, but rather a virtual core, which guarantees nothing in terms of performance. With VPS' you share a server with many other clients, the lower end your VPS is, the more clients will be sharing that particular server. If one (or more) of those clients are doing something that takes a heavy amount of CPU, they could effectively be taking your CPU resources, leaving you with about 5% of the CPU time you "should" have. The bottom line: If it's going to be a serious server, get a dedicated box.

As far as bandwidth goes, I run my 24 player server comfortably (no lag at all) with a 6Mbps upload speed. So the 100Mbps minimum that you get with most server hosts is more that most people will ever need.

AMD CPUs are considerably worse than Intel's when it comes to Minecraft, the main reason being that AMD CPUs have terrible IPC which results in poor single-threaded performance, which is the most important factor Minecraft server hosting as most of the work goes through 1 thread. As others have said, it is blind to judge a CPU on clock speed alone, a 2GHz quad-core CPU with twice the IPC as a 3GHz quad-core CPU with still vastly outperform it.

Last but not least for all the kids out there: RAM IS NOT THE DEFINING FACTOR OF A SERVERS PERFORMANCE, ASKING A SERVER OWNER TO "ALLOCATE MORE RAM TO THE UNITED STATES TO REDUCE LAG" WILL MAKE YOU LOOK LIKE A MORON TO ANYONE WITH THE SLIGHTEST BIT OF COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE. (Yes, someone actually asked me this).

Wow, that's a lot of text... I guess having to deal with so many people that think they know anything about servers when they know nothing so often is the cause of the pent-up rant material. Feel free to copy & paste this post when someone spreads misinformation.

By BIOS, I assume you mean the POST screen, in which case it is not that.
The POST screen (the first image that shows when you turn on a computer) is built into the motherboard's ROM and cannot be changed without very difficult (and dangerous!) editing of the BIOS. I would very much doubt they would go through the effort of doing that.

You could check out our server, 'The Simple SMP Server'
Essentially it's an 'enhanced vanilla' server which keeps to the roots of Minecraft whilst incorporating some things such as essentials. The player base is small at the moment but we are growing at a steady pace.

Anyway, here is the IP: 81.111.252.229

    Nvidia GTX 680M overclocked.
It's now roughly the speed of a desktop GTX 760.

That's the thing with these pre-built 'gaming' PCs.

They draw your interest with a top-end CPU but then drop in a completely mediocre GPU which will be a significant bottleneck throughout the system. This is the reason why despite the good hardware the price remains decently cheap.

As a ThinkPad enthusiast I would not recommend buying any Lenovo product that isn't a ThinkPad, seriously.

The Steelseries Sensei is my personal favourite, being left-handed, the ambidextrous design really helps.
