Well, idk if he's real or not but here's what i DO know. I had a world (1.4.2) and i lived near a village. I started a mine and got like about 20-30 Diamonds and 64 gold ore. I got home and random cobble was on top of village houses and my house was gone, completely and the only thing left was my chests. My chicken farm was gone too and so was my mine cart system through the village. So do i believe in herobrine? I don't know. Could it be a chunk load error? Possibly. But I don't know.
