I am quite liking this idea, not because I think admins need a place in politics, but because it would allow experienced admins to aid the new president. Being president will (hopefully) be a very complex job and president-selected cabinet members would be just as inexperienced as the president. Permanent admin cabinet members would make being president an easier task in the beginning as they would be able to coach him or her a bit.

So what do the rest of you think about this? Mind having a little admin in your politics or do you hate Reese's?

Fantasymasterhow about this for keeping control of the server: put the owner as head of security (in command of police force and army), and get the admins high positions in the forces. that way, if the president starts doing things (s)he shouldn't, then there could be a 'coup', where the army takes over the government . It would be very real .

And then a never ending civil war shall begin between the rebel army and the president's loyalists which will lead to the destruction of all humanity. While I do think this would be funny, impeaching may be the better way to go.


ElGilbartoThis sounds awesome, I think there should be an admin/owner who is permantly at the top, not to make decisions just to keep things in order (hacking etc). Not making any decisions or influencing government but just keeping things fun and safe

That's the plan. At this point, admins are going to be responsible for the security of the server and for the features which cannot be handled automatically by plugins or by government (ie, changing the value of foreign trades or claiming land).

Alright, to spare us all from having to see 5 messages from me in a row (though I'm sure you would all like to see more of my avatar) I'm going try to reply to everyone so far in this one. Here goes...


CanIHazBlogI would love to be able to play on a server like this one. However, you must think of practicality. Servers that strongly rely on many players getting together all at once are generally very successful, as it makes the game play somewhat social, although it can be very hard to accumulate a solid player-base. With only ten people on the server, this server probably wouldn't be that fun. With hundreds of active players, and a constant 50+ players online, I think this idea could hit the top list.

My point: Unless you have the money and resources to get a large player-base, this project would be very hard to complete. If you do, by chance, get the player-base, this would be amazing!

That being said, if you would like a developer or two for the server, please contact me! I've had 2+ years of experience with programming (getting fairly close to three). I've been programming Java for about a year now and I know the Bukkit API fairly well. I have a small group of friends who all love to program, so we may be able to help you.

If you want to discuss things, just contact me via PM. We can find a good way for us to communicate from there.

This is one of my biggest worries for the server, apart from plugin setup. In order to make ensure this hopefully does not happen, I am first making sure that this is something players want and are hyped about it (hence this thread).Once the plugins are in place, the closed beta will be a method to slowly accumulate a player base. As more players join the beta, we can bring more of the features online. By the time of full release, we will hopefully have an established number of players who took part in the beta. As for finances, I have looked into acquiring a server host and I should be able to support the cost of the server for 2 to 4 months depending upon how many slots we need and how many donations we receive. By that time the server will hopefully be open and donations coming at a mild rate. And thank you for the offer to help, if I run into any issues I will let you know.


CreeperKiller102Do you have any idea when or if the server would start? I may not be a big help with coding and such but I could help with In-Game stuff such as Building.

My plan is to start working on the plugins in this coming week. My current goal is to get things up and running by mid-April, though at the moment I'm still unsure just how long it will take.


dancats511Sounds awesome. Also, if you do make this, you should get a plugin to make chat not global, and only people within a certain radius can hear. That'd be really good.
Overall sounds like a really good RPG addition to a minecraft server. Better than any of those stupid, overused factions ones.

My thought originally was to have different chat channels or groups. This way congressman (or congresswomen ) can talk to each other without it being seen in the public chat and a business could do the same. This would probably be added later as it is not something vital to the server. However, if the community would prefer a radial chat function than I am open for that too.

What he said ^. Please, feel free to post your ideas up on this thread. I cannot guarantee everyone of those ideas will be implemented immediately, but I want this to be a server by the players, for the players, and as such, feel everyone should get to contribute. It does not matter to me if this thread goes on to be a hundred pages long, if you post an idea I will read and consider it.

Funny enough, the first idea I had for this server was to have 4 nations, each in a different corner of the map, and they would not only have to manage their own economies but could go to war with each other. I scrapped this idea for the very same reason you mentioned, I was worried about the player count. Right now, I'm thinking it would be best to only have a single nation which would control a capital city and possibly a couple of smaller towns. There would be only one president. If the server's player count grew large enough, then I may consider opening up another nation which would then compete with the first one, though this is way down the road. Having only one nation and one main city will hopefully make things more manageable and help the players grow to form a community.

Just to clarify as I assume this is what lead you to think that there would be multiple nations, the "foreign nations" which corporations would be selling to would not actually exist. The prices would be set by owner/admin and would be used as a way pump money into the server's economy, as well as protect against inflation.

ReaCraftI disagree, I think people should vote for their Congressmen, if people don't like a Congressman, they vote for someone else during an election..


I think ideally I would prefer to have people vote for their own Congressmen, though it means making things even more complex. For the presidential election, all I planned was having people drop off a signed book with their selected candidate on election day into the 'voting booth' which would use water to carry the book to a private room where an admin will collect it and store all votes until the end of the day. If Congressman would have to be selected as well, I may have to install a vote plugin to make things easier. Or now that I think about it, I suppose players could simply vote for the President and Congress in the same book which will then be used to tally the votes for both.

Congress' power would hopefully be just as you mentioned though the issue is that it would be very difficult to code a plugin to stop the president from doing something. We would have to rely on Congressman simply holding a private vote via chat and then the owner/admins would have to make sure that the president follows congress' orders.

As for the cabinet, my idea was to have a dedicated admin serve as the adviser to the president in order to help him get things under control, though a cabinet would work nice as well if it is do-able.

There are so many things that I would like this server to do that it is a disappointment when you have to snap back to reality and remember what is possible.

I would probably start it as a closed beta which players would have to either donate or fill out an application to get into. After everything is under control we could open it to the public.

Well my hope is that the owner/admins can play just like normal players with the side job of managing the plugins and catching hackers.

As for the President, I have tried to consider this when I was coming up with the idea and so the prerequisite for becoming President is that they must have joined the server X number of weeks ago or played on it for X number of hours. This will ensure that the President is a dedicated member of the community who has invested a significant amount of time into it. If the President is not up to par then he can be impeached either the players or congress (if congress is created that is) or by the owner with admin support. He would not be forcibly impeached by the owner unless he was either deliberately messing with the server or does not play on the server for X number of days.

I would love to add Congress into the mix, though left it open because I am not quite sure if it would be possible via plugins. I would also like to add in a court and jail system though didn't mention because it would more than likely be added later rather than on launch.

At the moment, I'm unsure exactly how many custom plugins I will need. Currently on the list is:

iConomy (to add currency)
CashFlow (for taxes and salaries)
Citadel (to player homes/buildings)
Essentials (to grant different players different permissions such as the president)
ChestShop (for player run shops as well as for other things such as so businesses can pay employees by commission for when they bring them X which the business then takes and sells to the foreign nation chest shop and makes profit)

and a number of minor ones such as anti-cheat, block protection for main city, nicknames, etc.


The plugins it will take to get the economy up and running seem to be created, it is just the government and corporations which may take some work if I cannot find one.

But thank you very much for the offer and I'll be sure to let you know if/when I start putting the server together.
