When 1.8 came out i was excited and happy as could be with minecraft at the time. The terrain generation, at least with the circles under water and beaches being removed, was the only problem i had with it. When villagers were first introduced in a snapshot i was disapointed at first thinking 'testificates??? WTF. I wanted pigmen not big nosed weirdos!' but now every time i find a village i think it's great. The addition of jungles, ocelots, jungle and desert temples, cocoa beans being farmable, LAN worlds, villager trading and ESPECIALLY the level for max enchants going down i always thought were good ideas. Armored enemies? Cool. Game needs more of a reason to fear the dark. I personally don't like the idea of beacons, but then again, if i don't like it, I WON'T USE IT. Your perfectly capable of not using potions, enchants, villages, or even going to the end if you don't want to. Command blocks are awesome. If you don't like the idea, i've got good news for you. you can only get it through /give. You don't have to see it EVEN in creative.... At least not yet. If you love the old minecraft so damn much, instead of arguing, go download MCNostalgia, use it, and be happy. No matter which way minecraft goes, i'm sure it will be fun exploring new things. And if it gets too complicated, i can always go to my old worlds.

If i could add one thing, it would be a teleport block. With the addition of the ender chest, it's not too far off. It would be an expensive (probably would require obsidian diamond and ender pearls/eyes) block that you can place down and teleport to at the cost of en eye of ender. So you can explore as far as you want without getting lost, just teleport back to your house! Of course it would be something you get late in the game though...

Which is better? Well, play a game using redstone everywhere you can. You'll end up with auto harvesting farms, defense systems, secret rooms and any other contraption you can imagine. Now play a game using lapis lazuli everywhere you can. You'll end up with a blue world.
