I have no idea if crusaders era of heroes is a reference to a game, but focusing on the crusaders aspect of this theme (they were not heroes in real life), here's my ideas:
Paper: Used for crafting special maps that lead the player to nearby villages- like a treasure map, but to villages instead!
Ink sac: Also used in the crafting of above mentioned map
String: Used to craft rope, in order to crucify non believers
Gold: Used to craft holy crosses, symbols, jewelry, religious cosmetic garbs
