Yes, however community building seems harder in recent years.

You'll probably use Buycraft as your payment platform, which supports a lot of different gateways other than PayPal - Though I'm not sure on the chargeback policies on all of those.

You can get pretty creative with the EULA, like global-boosts that apply to all players (not just the buyer).

Owning a server is a long-term commitment, let them do whatever they need to remain interested in Minecraft. You can't know how much effort they put into the server, or how many times they've stayed up all night fixing a problem after they just got in bed.

You volunteer to help the community, it isn't about being someone else's slave.

Quit if you dislike the community or its future.

ChihiroPeople can do what they want.

To expand a tiny bit on what was mentioned.
If you're hosting it yourself / Not using Minecraft-specific hosting etc:

Even if everything looks to be working fine, still triple check your setup compared to the installation files of Spigot/Bungee etc.

For example: Bungeecord will work fine even if the bungee setting isn't enabled on each of your servers; It does however let hackers pretend to be your bungee network and join your server with whatever username they like.

All of it looks completely fine to me, no feature bloat.

I would however try and stresstest the server to see if it lags much without the 'extra' fun stuff first.

You can't do anything with gaming knowledge alone.

I really doubt there's much for you to do if you aren't particularly great at a game, entertaining or well written.

    That said:
As a day-job, streaming on Twitch will likely be better than YouTube as its easier to break into, but if you aren't going to put the time into it like you would a normal job then what's the point of this post?

Apply for all the games testing positions you can, but you'll quickly find out it's very little about gaming and more about repeating the same task over and over until something happens ohwait that's gaming. (Requires a lot of writing)

I can imagine people quitting after not getting reelected.

    Two main problems to consider:

You want to avoid players gaining power over other players (obviously unless you have hand picked staff members). It leads to all sorts of arguments/bullying/anger, as most people simply can't be trusted with any control. (Not to mention popularity contests for power are usually bad).

"You think you do, but you don't." - Honestly players don't know what's good for them a lot of the time. For example, ask your server if they want daily drop parties of rare gear and you bet they'll say yes; They don't care that it will ruin the economy, or make gear in general pointless because "Hey, its free gear!".

    --

To expand on my first point, applying to all sizes of server: Its easy to fall into having an inner-circle of people and you find yourself only caring about their opinions. To you, the inner-circle are just your regulars, but to other players it will seem like favoritism.

EDIT: This is written not particularly aimed at you btw, I haven't looked at your profile/server.

    Don't over complicate it.

You need to appear as a proper server, and not a kid asking people to look at his lego.
    This basically means:
    - As long as your banner isn't an over-stretched image, obviously stolen content or says stuff like 'pls join', you'll be fine. Keep it simple and to the point, the idea isn't about attracting people its about not scaring people away.
    - Depending on your server, the description can pretty much be anything. Again, as long as don't seem like a lonely child looking for friends. Have a look at other servers of your type and see what you like and dislike about their descriptions.
    - Having players online. Now whilst I'm not particularly recommending using a fake player plugin, if you have any alts or mates with accounts, get them logged in. Just a few at most really.
    - Voting. Depending on your server, I'd mostly recommend focusing completely on one voting site. I personally have a roleplay server, and PMC is the only listing site that only lets you select one category; this rocks for me because usually big networks list themselves as everything and actual roleplay servers get buried. Some EULA-friendly voting rewards are to have a chance to give all players a speed boost for 5 minutes, or some fireworks, money etc etc.

You can learn more by looking at bad servers than good ones. So go looking around for things you don't like, figure out why you don't like it and how it should be improved.

    Extra stuff:
    - YouTube Trailers videos are NOT worth it unless they're good. A bad trailer will scare away more people than attract.
    - Paying for advertisements, eh. Don't lead with this tactic, get a base community first and get past all the other inevitable problems you'll have. Besides from attracting players to join, you will also need to work on getting newbies to stay. If you have the money or have already had your start and looking for a boost, sure why not. (I have no experience with how effective it is).

An actual list of things you could sell legally:

Name-only ranks (Just something next to their name, not linked to kits or any restrictions)

    Cosmetic pets

Disguises (as long as they can't be used to gain an advantage in a PVP environment, unless you let them use some disguises by default also)

    Particle trails

    (Banner) hats

Message space (like a hologram at spawn with the last donator's name on it) (this could be used for things like shop / town advertising depending on your server.

Did you know its against the EULA to give someone a reward for voting for their server on PMC?

Thanks for the all the replies! Honestly I was expecting more people to lean towards the old system, but I'm glad the opposite is happening (almost).

Nitwick's point about hacking is really helpful also, is a very valid point.

Sammo346I'd argue this system is just the same, but you click on a timer.

    How so?

For the maximum DPS you only have to keep clicking as soon as the timer resets. It isn't that hard to get your finger continuously doing that once you practice for 5 seconds.

e.g. Its very much the time as the last time but it takes longer before you hit them again, compared to the old one where if you look away from them for a moment you're missing out on a lot of potential damage.

    Thanks for the reply ^_^

Whilst it was just spam clicking, you did have to try and keep your cursor over your enemy for all of that.

I'd argue this system is just the same, but you click on a timer.

People on servers tend to go down right at the start and right at the end of holidays.
    Completely normal.

1.10 created a little bit of a divide, but people'll get over it as their servers update.

Staying fresh is hard for servers, but the playerbase still exists and is just moving around.

Think of the next wave of kids about to start playing, also

Shaders; BSL Standard and TME Shaders
These both run really well whilst being pretty high-end.

If you're still getting lag and you're sure you've set everything to the fastest option, there isn't much you can do. It isn't like quickly upgrading RAM will do anything, etc.

    Thanks

Elysium is based around finding people of similar ability to your own and making everyone better at roleplaying, so we have stuff like dedicated areas for intermediate and advanced RP.

Whilst we have lore and an obvious medieval time-setting, if you're in the wilderness with friends you're welcome to have private RP about anything you want, like space or modern adventures.

    --

Otherwise, there really are loads of good serious roleplay servers around, a lot of which are on PMC. Whilst Elysium doesn't require an application, there are hardcore RP servers like HollowWorld that cover that kind of stuff.

Make a backup of spawn using WorldEdit schematics.

This way is the easiest if you know what you're doing:

Make sure your server.properties has the correct seed.
Find out which region(s) your spawn is in. https://dinnerbone.com/minecraft/tools/coordinates/
Delete all other region files from the world folder.

P2W is bad, and the current EULA has a logical separation of how to earn money. Remember one of the reasons for the change was so servers don't trick kids (that don't have a proper grasp on money's value) into spending too much.

However, it has made it much harder for newer servers to get money than it was before. I don't think all non-cosmetic options have malicious intent, and I also think it depends on the server. Roleplayers don't care if you paid for a double-jump, creative players don't care if you can change your speed, PVP players don't care if your hunger is reduced.

In reality, new server owners mostly just need to get creative with their donation options. You don't need to base your server around donations, but at least consider how it can be helped.

I get most of my own donations for custom race names, ability to change item lore, pets and disguises. Those things might not be suitable for all servers, so think about how you can change it so it is.

bloxParadise_Hey guys. I think this would be a funny thread to create.

    I'll start off..
You know you own a server when you have 100,000 jumps in your stats :3

    You aren't wrong!

I'm currently third year studying for a degree in computer games programming, the first year was focused on C#

Go through the Bucky C++ tutorials, a whole lot of it will be transferable. Once you learn the basic differences and how to use headers and whatnot, then start the Unreal tutorials
