Everyone mark your calendars for tomorrow

two epic space events are happening

    1. Jupiter will be at its closest to earth in 107 years
    2. NASA will be hitting an asteroid with a space probe to knock it off course (the asteroid isnt dangerous, this is a test mission to see if we can actually deflect asteroids from hitting earth)

the asteroid mission is called DART and the impact on the asteroid (Dimorphos) will be live streamed
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6Z1E0mW2ag
as of the time im making this post it goes live in 27 hours

the asteroid is millions of miles away from earth
the asteroid and satellite were not orbiting earth
the asteroid was not dangerous in any way

    so no

Isn't hitting asteroids with a satellite going to create high speed metal shrapnel that will orbit around the planet creating another problem?

    Hey @CatWanderingTheGalaxy I know you’re a Jupiter fan so you’ll enjoy this

on Monday this week jupiter will reach its closest distance to earth it’s ever been in 107 years
it will be the third brightest object in the sky behind the sun and the moon
Go outside Monday night and you’ll be able to see it, it’ll be the brightest star
with a telescope or just a decent pair of binoculars you might even be able to see jupiters moons and bands of gas

today is another cool day in space history

today however many years ago (i forget) we discovered the first direct proof of gravitational waves

those are basically the waves on space and time itself as two black holes collide, producing more energy than entire galaxies in a few seconds

these waves travelled for billions of years until they stumbled across a little blue planet with some smart monkeys who detected them

thus finally proving Einstein's theory of relativity

    so yeah

CHECK OUT MY LATEST FORUM POST TO ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE ABOUT EINTEIN'S RELATIVITY THEORY OR GRAVITATIONAL WAVES

If gravitational waves (or gravitational interaction in general) propagate at the speed of light, then our galaxy can be attracted to where there is nothing now.

yeah, that space nerd one is the forum where you can ask your questions, but I'll answer them here

black holes have gravity, just like any other object, so they attract each other. Black holes can collide in the same way planets could. Supermassive black holes like the ones we detected colliding when we first detected gravitational waves rarely meet, and if they do, its usually because the galaxies they're pulling around with them are colliding.

When they collide it does make a larger black hole, yes. The energy is created because these black holes carry with them enormous discs of scorching plasma with the mass of hundreds of stars called accretion discs, which release a lot of energy. When the black holes collide its like a million supernovae happening at once from all the radiation. The energy is created simply because the accretion disc rotates so fast it turns even stars into boiling soup.

Einstein's theory of relativity summed up is: empty space is not static. We used to think space and time were unchanging, like a floor, with all the objects of the universe "sitting" on the floor. Einstein predicted that space was more like a trampoline. Heavy objects bend space itself like how you standing on a trampoline bends it. He also predicted that time, as well as space, also bends around nearby objects, causing time to go slower the closer you are to a bigger object. That's called time dilation. So, under the theory of relativity, space and time (which is combined into one single thing called spacetime) are not static, and can be affected by massive objects

so, that's what gravitational waves are. Since the black holes are so massive, they bend space a lot. And when two black holes orbit ridiculously fast around each other, these ripples in spacetime act like waves, shooting out across the universe at the speed of light. Einstein also predicted black holes to exist, since a black hole, to put it simply, is an infinitely small object that bends spacetime so much it forms a boundary around it that even light can't escape.

I explain how black holes work better on that space nerd forum too, its one of the first replies

hope this answered your questions, and if you have any more, go check out the forum

I didn't see the forum post anywhere (im really bad at looking for things, so thats proabaly why, unless its the one about asking a space nerd anything...) so ima just ask you here! Here are all eight million of my questions! how would two black holes collide? What happens when they do? (Besides making a ton of energy ofc) do they combine to make a larger black hole? How is the energy created? Can you explain Einstein's theory of reletivity in basic words? (I didnt understand how google put it) how does this prove his theory? Sorry if this is too many questions, or they're all stupid.

“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard”

60 years ago today JFK made that recognizable speech, urging America to land humans on the Moon. Fitting that Artemis 1 launches in a few weeks. Our first step to establishing a permanent lunar presence

    MOON COLONY LETS GOOOOO

just imagine, in just 50 years when we’re all like 60 or 70, you could just casually go on a vacation to the moon.

    So yeah

come to my new forum post to ask your moon-related (or just space in general related) questions

the stepping stone to the asteroid belt

personally though I wouldn't go to mars, mainly because it takes 7 months to get there, then you have to stay for two years, and then seven months back

maybe when im old ill spend three years going to mars, but for now probably not

i've been talking about this sort of stuff recently irl since its just so cool. going to the moon would be such an interesting thing and i'd most certainly go if i could afford it at the time, assuming it would be extremely expensive lol.

also, not that this has to do with the moon, but they're planning on sending people over to mars in late 2030s early 2040s iirc? obviously the plans may change, but its still really awesome to think about.
