They added a lot of new commands recently: /playsound, new gamerules naturalRegeneration and doDaylightCycle, /setblock, /testfor block, and /summon, and the new statistics and achievements scoreboard criteria, and the ability to specify NBT data like custom names and lore from the /give and /summon commands.

Sounds awesome! Though my hope was that they would use the old Giant mob for an overworld boss, in a form with an updated artificial intelligence.

Yeah, I've been wondering about that myself. I mean, they did an april fool's joke that was called "Minecraft 2.0." So it will be hard for anyone to take that version number seriously. Not to mention that as far as I know, Minecraft has NEVER had a version number above 1.9, whether in alpha, beta, or full release.

At Minecon 2013 the folks at Mojang specifically stated that they wouldn't add wallslabs, during one of the Q & A sessions, because they are running out of bytes for the way orientations of slabs are stored in the chunks.

But, then again, they have changed their mind about lots of things. For instance, they were originally not going to include the landscape generator changes in the first 1.7 snapshot 13w36a, but then they changed their minds and included those changes.

Well, command block usage teaches you a lot about how programming works. You can learn architecture and interior decorating by building structures in Minecraft and decorating their interiors. It can also be used for physics lessons (somewhat.)

I'd definitely pick Minecraft for being real. That would be awesome, and also you can make virtually any other game within Minecraft, so you're set by just having Minecraft. I've seen people make Connect four, Battleship, Pacman, Skeeball, and the list of possibilities goes on endlessly.

I love this update, all the new stuff is awesome, but I was hoping for more new dispenser abilites than we got. Stuff that fit right in with all these redstone additions, like the way they made it so that dispensers can use bonemeal on plants in front of them.

I also wanted them to be able to plant plants, and breed animals, in order to make fully automated farms and ranches. Bone-meal usage was on my "wish list" for redstone stuff, but the update was lacking these dispenser abilities. Most of the updates for 1.5 were on my "wish list," which makes this an amazing update in my opinion.

I was also hoping that they'd add a block that when powered by a redstone pulse turns whatever item that is in front of the business end of the block into an item. I call it an "itemizer." That'd really help for auto-harvesting cobblestone generators, auto-harvesting farms, and even it'd be useful for automated mining.
