In the second half of 1891, the Compagnie de Navigation Internationale expanded the Africa route, which had been introduced the previous year, by adding two new vessels to operate a regular service as far as the Ivory Coast. The 100-metre-long Président Milo, formerly the Sénégal, and her sister ship, the Mauritanie, became the new flagships on this route upon their entry into service. The Président Milo accommodates 56 first-class and 196 third-class passengers. The crew consists of 53 men. With a cargo capacity of up to 2,800 tonnes, the ship transports passengers and freight between metropolitan France and the North and West African colonies.
First-class accommodation on the Président Milo is an evolutionary improvement on that of the old Marseille and now offers three fully-fledged public areas. Third-class accommodation provides space for up to 196 passengers in two dormitories.
The engine room is characterised by its redundancy. It can operate normally even with only three of the four boilers. The ballast pump system is decentralised, so that the system continues to function even if one pump fails. It is also equipped with a Brigantine rig.

Le Génie Civil – September 1891
    Steamship Amédée Courbet
-The Largest Vessel on the Marseille–Saigon Route

Commissioned on the 7th of September, the steamship Amédée Courbet becomes the new flagship of the Compagnie de Navigation Internationale and the largest vessel assigned to the Marseille–Saigon line. In terms of size, she surpasses the Australien, Polynésien, and Armand Béhic of the Messageries Maritimes Australia service.
Originally constructed by J. & G. Thomson for a Belgian transatlantic shipping company, the vessel was subsequently acquired by the Compagnie de Navigation Internationale, which modified her arrangements for service on the Far Eastern routes.

The vessel, measuring 157.3 metres in length and 16.35 metres in beam, accommodates across three decks 170 first-class, 241 second-class, and 212 third-class passengers. A crew of 192 ensures the regularity and proper conduct of the service.
First-class passengers are provided with five principal public rooms, including a music salon, a lounge, a reading and writting room, a smoking room with veranda and a spacious dining saloon. Second-class passengers are likewise provided with a dining room, a smoking room, and a lounge arranged within the main staircase, complemented by additional seating areas on the lower decks.
Third-class passengers are accommodated in comparatively spacious quarters located in the forward part of the vessel.

Propulsion is provided by two triple-expansion engines, supplied by a set of four single-ended and four double-ended boilers, enabling the vessel to attain a speed of 18 knots, allowing it to complete the route in 28 days under perfect conditions.

Planes may be faster, but (even before devolving into flying sardine cans) lacked many of the amenities passenger liners could provide.

    December 1931.
A group of trappers and Inupiat travel along the coast of northern Alaska with their dog sleds. In the distance, far out on the ice, they see three ice pillars rising up. Fascinated, they venture out onto the ice. As they approach, a black hull emerges from the ice. It is a ship, completely frozen and covered with ice. No smoke comes from the funnel, no light from the windows and portholes, no one on deck. The ship seems to have been abandoned for a long time. They climb aboard. The holds are open and full of furs. There is no one in the quarters. The coal in the bunkers is almost used up, the fires in the boilers extinguished. The ship is stuck, with no chance of being saved. So they leave it to its fate. As they leave the ship behind, they could hardly have imagined that this ghostly ship would continue to haunt these waters for decades to come.

New Update for Northumbria - I've added a quick Fly-Through Video showcasing my work on the New Brick Manor Lower Interior. The walls have been covered in a wooden finish called Wainscoting. Exotic Eastern Oriental Rugs acquired as spoils of the Crusading Wars dress the Manor's floors. The Lord and Lady's table sits perpendicular to the lower noble's table. Candles and oil lamps are the only form of light. Fireplaces with Chimneys are a new invention that only the very rich could dare to afford. Some members have asked if this Manor is based on a real building. Here is an image of the Chenies Manor in England on which this structure was heavily influenced.

Northumbria just got its first BRICK Building!

So......Why are BRICKS such an important invention...??

Today, we take the humble Brick for granted. We think nothing of bulldozing a building and throwing bricks into landfill.

But, once upon a time, Bricks were such a valuable commodity that they were valued equal to Bronze.

They were so prized that they were even recycled and bequeathed in a person's will & testament.
Brick-Built Structures were first introduced to Britain during the Roman occupation
43AD-410AD. However, when Rome withdrew from the Britannic colony, the
technology disappeared with the 6th century Anglo-Saxon timber-building culture. Bricks
were not seen in Britain again until the 1100's (12th century).

    Northumbria
just got its first Brick-Built Building. The Manorial Estate of the
local Lord has showcased his wealth and prestige by building his new
    family home in Brick.

So, why were Bricks so valuable? Like all
new "Trends", Bricks were not widely available and required a
specialised technique to produce. It wasn't until European Royalty
copied Brick Structures from the Byzantine Empire, that they became
instantly fashionable with European Aristocrats. As European builders
scrambled to learn & adopt the technology, the usual "Supply &
Demand" constraints made them even more expensive.

What were the Benefits of "Bricks"?
Bricks were not only able to be mass-produced from
local clay, but they could also be uniquely designed to shape the
    design of a specific building.
Furthermore, Bricks had a tensile quality that could perfectly counter the destructive effects of the new cannon-arsenal now delivering an existential threat to traditional
stone-built strongholds. Bricks allowed cannon-fired projectiles to pass
through a wall without bringing down the entire fabric of the building.
The mass of bricks proved itself to be a much more flexible material,
acting similarly to the qualities of earthen embankments.
    billoxiiboy • 2025-07-11 23:37:44
    Hey again o/
Yes it will have interiors. I'm working on them at this very moment. The build is fictional - but based heavily upon real properties that I have researched. Chenies Manor played a huge part in influencing this structure. It was first built in 1180 and fell into disrepair and revamped again a few times until the mid 1500's. It has an incredible history - click HERE if you want to read a little about its history. Most notably, I have added more windows. The current Manor has very few windows. Most were removed after the window tax was placed on buildings in 1696 by William III.
    sillyfool420 • 2025-07-11 19:26:57
Wow, so cool. Is this a recreation of an existing manor? Will it have an interior? Sorry for the questions this is just all really cool and I can’t believe I didn’t hear about this before.
