So there's no point in playing on your server at all? If I try to play survival I'll be playing next to a bunch of ops? I can have op on a home server. This is not a reward. It is an insult.

Then you're doing it wrong. You're using a virtual private server that you've never seen with your own eyes?

Yes. I do own a server.
My server cost: $0 Owned dedicated server. (Granted, I paid thousands for the box)
Hosting: $40 a month. This includes domain, housing and bandwidth.
    DDoS protection: $10 a month.
    Domain cost: included with housing
Extra Ram: $0 - purchased years ago.

IndianaJones104You should become an overpowered player because you "donated"

We can assume you meant to say "shouldn't".
This is as I was pointing out. Minecraft is a game where you mine, and hunt, and trade. It's not a game about voting and giving away your money. This completely breaks the game.

Server costs, themselves, actually cost no more than a common hobby, or a drinking habit. Anyone can afford one. It is the advertising costs that cost much, much more, which is sad when you consider what these server list sites actually DO for the money. They set up a website, and then sat back and watched the money roll in.

It is EASY to be op or to get diamonds on a minecraft server. Just make one, or find a creative server. It's not like they are worth anything at all.
It is NOT easy to be op or to get diamonds on a GOOD minecraft server (in my opinion).

I see this more and more too. I join a "survival" server, and I start out with stacks of diamond blocks. How is that survival? That's luxury. I'd love to have diamond blocks in real life, and I'm not even "surviving". I live a fairly fruitful life. Warping and teleporting abilities are not survival. I cannot think of one instance where I was stranded in the wilderness, and couldn't find food, so I simply teleported away like a fairy.
This is another ill-fated practice to get votes/players; catering to the player. A stack of spawned diamonds is not a heart-felt gift. I can /give player diamond 42342 all day long. No sweat. It's not something that one should be thankful for. It's an insult. I can dig out my own diamonds. I don't need the game's economy and resources to be based on random admin mood changes, or favortism.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Even I have been FORCED into rewarding my players for votes, just to be visible somewhere on the first few thousand pages of most list sites. I don't believe the servers are to blame here. It is the server list sites themselves that made a fortune ruining Minecraft. Any new player who goes to one of these sites to find a good server will get a horrible impression of what Minecraft actually is, all in the name of good old money.
Maybe I should create a REAL server review site...

I highly respect this decision by Planet Minecraft. It's certainly a step in the right direction. Though votes are still used, I'm sure it fell to relying on a framework that was already put in place. The only alternative I can personally think of would be to actually review the servers, officially, and by no fault of PM, that has become a joke in itself.

    zakary is correct.
Not only is all of this possible, but... I've done ALL of these things to test out my new players, to see how they respond to particular situations. And no, they could not see that I was online.
