I'd recommend using a cool seed cause 1.7.3 was the last update they had with the cool terrain generation.. After 1.7.3 beta the seeds and terrain were all messed up. If you don't know any good seeds I recommend

Mojang: (Nothing really about this other than that everyone has at least played on this seed once during 1.7.) I heard it was known for lots of diamonds.

729: My personal Favorite due to the endless terrain of mountains (Mountains are honestly what made 1.7.3 and below seed generation great.) You spawn near a forest, desert and right next to the Gigantic mountain biome.

Elfen Lied: (I'm pretty sure there is a space in the name but if you don't get the right seed just do it without the space.) This one is another great seed known for it's unique mountain generation. You spawn near Mountains just like "729" but this one has a bit more "Floating islands"

Quesadilla: This one has 3 spawners 20 blocks away from spawning point (2 able to be seen from sky.) but I didn't just say this for it's 3 spawners (As this would be useless for even a small sized server.) I named this one for it's overall good level generation.

Whether or not you use these I think you should at least check them out.

Although just remember if you add mods it only affects you. So you can play the way you choose depending on which mods you use and which servers you go on. I'm ok if they add stuff but when they are pretty much changing the whole concept of the game I feel like they've gone too far. they need to have a setting to disable some of the new stuff they've added. I'm ok if they add new blocks (More blocks for building = better) or if they add some new commands (Helps with vanilla map making.) Or some extra biomes with random spawning structures. (Good for singleplayer survival.) but when they add stuff like the combat cooldown (Probably the worst thing ever implemented.) elytra, witches and all these new "Fantasy" creatures it changes the feel of the game.
It's nice when that they're adding stuff but at the end of the day are the things they've added helpful? Are they making the game better? I'd say no, (However they're might be differing opinions.) but remember each time they add something to the game that is useless Everyone has to use it.

Honestly Minecraft is going to go downhill and it's going to be jeb and his developers fault. They've litterally turned a survival game into a fantasy rpg game. Keep the unneeded stuff to the modders and to the servers that use plugins.

Josephpicabut the fact that you can't correctly run a 1.8 model resource pack in 1.9 is dumb, considering that you already have the old code for it.

I agree I was almost done making a texture pack for my server then I realised that it doesn't work with 1.9+

    The "Combat" update.

1.9 pvp. (Not the elytra or anything else. Just the things that changed the pvp aspect in mc.)

All Minecraft youtubers (Big and small) and their fanbase

Owners who make you staff then take down a server a week later after you put a lot of work into it.

How PMC's server list is flooded with servers made in minutes or unoriginal ideas like faction, prison, skyblock, survival, etc. (So people who do spend time, effort and/or money on their server gets flooded out by the unoriginal servers made in like 5 minutes.)

The thing is that lots of work needs to be done on servers like this. The key to a good server isn't only having nice staff. (Although I do agree having polite staff is very vital in having a successful server.) If we only had staff with none of the above talents or skills we'd have no map, custom plugins to set us apart from the competition a signature server texture pack or an original server in general.

Having talented staff isn't just good for the Owner and the server, but for the players. No one wants to play on a map downloaded from PMC (Cause chances are other servers use it.) Same with custom plugins, if we had no one that helped me code we wouldn't have the type of gameplay we have right now. If we didn't use our skills our server would be like everyone else's and nobody would play on ours.

Also, you have to remember that being nice to players is a trait and not really what I'd consider as a skill, or something hard to find in a staff member. I do believe it is important, in fact any of my staff members were disrespectful to any of our players they'd be demoted instantly. We put our players > Ourselves in our server.

Also one last thing. (Trying not to be harsh.) I notice you said that you had none of the above skills and neither do most people. But I would just like to say that I too started somewhere I wasn't born with the talent of building, gfx and coding on minecraft. I trained and kept trying until I was decent enough for the server and the more I tried doing stuff I was bad at the better I got. I went from building rectangle houses to building modern, medieval, apocalyptic and many other styles of builds. In fact I even learned how to terraform the map with custom trees/mountains/rivers and more for the server so it wasn't just a server on flatland. I used to be terrible with plugins too. When I first joined I always asked other staff or people online to help me with Groupmanager/essentials/permission etc and as time went on I tried for myself and the more I tried the better I got. (I now am able to work with pretty much any plugin I come across almost instantly now.) and same with Graphics I went from only being able to make stick figures or making simple skins to being able to almost finish an entire server texture pack (64 x 64) (Which of course is still being made.) and almost getting the hang of making 3d items and blocks.

The point of me saying this isn't to brag about what I'm good at or what I can do. It's to show you and everyone else that it doesn't matter if you're bad at something at the moment. No one is going to be bad at something forever unless they give up or never try it in the first place. Same with you, you aren't as talentless as you might think. In fact if you want I can help teach you in any of the above categories if you want. All you have to do is be active, have high expectations and just don't give up. Once you do that you'll realize how easy everything really was. Again for anyone else if you're not talented (Yet) in anything stated above just 1. ask for any of us to teach you (As it wouldn't bother us.) 2. Teach yourself and apply in the future. (It's a helpful trait to not having to rely on anyone and shows you're responsible.) or 3. If you're not talented or you just don't want to do any of the things above just apply for a rank with less perms. (In case you forgot, you don't need to be staff to enforce the rules or be nice.)

Good luck to anyone who is applying in the future. ~Vasch
