Does your system exhibit the exact same behaviour if you boot using the Ubuntu Live CD? (Not installation) The Ubuntu installation CD has an option to "Try Ubuntu" without installing.
if it does, It could be the motherboard, RAM or power supply if not it could be the hard drive. There's also an option on booting the CD for a memory test. What does it come up with?
