Big spawns are annoying, small spawns are even more annoying.
I'd go for a theme and something just the right size, I would also refrain from using tons of signs. Instead of writing on signs, add a interactive "click me" thing that makes the rules show up in their chat. Players are more likely to read those than a bunch of boring signs.
Make sure the spawn is a safe zone.
