Ibong Adarna

  Ibong Adarna is a bird from a 16th century epic named after the bird. The protagonist is a prince named Don Juan. The bird sits on a golden tree and is a creature wished for due to it's healing songs. The older brothers to Don Juan, Don Diego and Don Pedro are both sent out at different times to retrieve the bird. Each time the bird would sing seven times, at the seventh the victim would be turned to stone. Don Juan is sent after his brothers, he meets a hermit on his way to the bird and the hermit impressed by his manners gives him some of the necessary items to survive the bird. Don Juan also gets some water from a nearby well to free his petrified brothers. For some reason Don Pedro is brutal and it takes a lot of convincing from Don Diego's side to stop him from killing Juan. Instead Juan is beat up and abandoned on the side of the road. Miraculously Juan survives.
  Juan being the kind naive person he is saves his brothers from being removed from the royal family and exiled. Instead they are given a warning. If they were to try anything like that again they would indeed be exiled and removed from the royal family, or worse. Don Pedro for some idiotic reason has yet to learn his lesson. He still thirsts revenge and wants to get rid of Juan. They make Juan believe that he has lost the bird Ibong Adarna and goes on a quest to supposedly save it.
  Ibong Adarna is not really involved much in the story after this so I'm going to stop summarizing the summary here. At the end of the story Don Juan gets a happy life and becomes king and his wife becomes queen.


  The design for the Ibong Adarna was not included anywere I could find so decided to use a picture on the web to design it. I think this one works pretty well saying that the bird sat on a golden tree. A golden bird on a golden tree.

  I would also like to point out that I do not agree with all the messages from the story. Sense this was old fashioned women had considerably less rights then men. Women would often be forced to marry a man when they come of age. I know this is part of history but I think it was a very dark time. Women not getting a say can make society corrupt. It is important that everyone is represented equally and in history this was often not the case.

  Other than obvious difference between men and women this is a great story that teaches you that kindness pays off. A message that perhaps was needed to be seen more in those times. It might be seen more in the Information Age but it still needs to be shown more.
