Mosstrosities like to dig deep underground in search of deeper dungeons. Even if they were created to protect the dungeons, those machines left spawners alone and dug into the Nether. They stayed there only because Nether is absolute rock bottom and those who managed to get past the lower bedrock in that dimension were never destined to come back ever again.
