The red-capped bear (Ursus rubercephala), also known as the socialable bear, is a species of large bear bear endemic to North America. It is one of the continent's most widely distributed bear species. Red-capped bears are, on average, of between 250 and 300 kilograms (550 and 660 lbs) in weight and a length of nearly 2.5 meters (8.2 feet). The skulls of red-capped bears are broad, with narrow muzzles and large jaw hinges. The fur of this species, as its name suggests, is generally deep brown in color with the reddish-orange top, although there are specimens that are darker brown in color with equally darker reddish-orange top. The red-capped bear is an omnivore, with its diet varying greatly depending on season and location. It typically lives in forested areas and open plains, but will leave forests and open plains into the more arid environments in search of food, and is sometimes attracted to human communities due to the immediate availability of food. Unlike any other species of bear, the red-capped bear is a social animal that lives in organized packs, similarly to wolves, African wild dogs, and lions. As such, the red-capped bear is capable of hunting animals as large as bison. The red-capped bear is threatened by habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, poaching for trade with its body parts and killings in human–wildlife conflict situations, particularly with ranchers in Mexico and southern United States. It was listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List prior to 2002, however, thanks to the conservation efforts, it has recovered and downlisted to Least Concern. The red-capped bear has featured prominently in the mythology of indigenous peoples of the Americas, including those of the Aztec, Maya, and Cherokee civilizations.
